Can you keep a 5 year old named Jax in your prayers?
One of my best friends has been at children's hospital since Sunday with his 5 year old son. It started out as the flu, then a nagging cough. Sunday morning, they noticed some swelling by his neck and he was wheezing really bad and they took him to the hospital, which after checking his oxygen levels, they rushed him to children's hospital. The swelling has spread from his neck to his chest, shoulders and face. It is so bad he can't evenue open his eyes and it is cutting off his oxygen, so he has to be sedated and on a ventilator. Children's has a staff of doctors trying to figure out where the air is coming from that is causing the swelling and haven't been able to in 3 days. He was diagnosed with pneumonia yesterday and they were told the pneumonia had gotten worse this morning.
I've spent the last couple days with them and it is heart breaking to feel so helpless and have doctors tell you they are trying to figure it out.

I don't know what else I can do for them, so I'm resorting to reaching out to as many people as I can to keep him in their prayers and hope for the best possible outcome.

Prayers for sure. No worse feeling as a parent than seeing your child sick and feeling helpless to do anything about it.

Just got off the phone with my buddy. The doctor's figured out where the swelling was coming from. They found two "blurbs" on his.lungs from when he was born. They are bubbles on the lungs. Less than 5% of children born with this condition has one burst and he had both burst, which caused the immediate swelling.

Now the problem is, they have to do surgery to repair his lung, but cannot do so til he gets over the flu and pneumonia.

So they aren't out of the woods yet, but at least they know what is causing the biggest problem.

Just talked with my buddy again -- Jax was able to sit up on his own for a few minutes. He was also able to eat a little bit of solid food.
He still has the swelling, but the doctors said the infection from the pneumonia and flu looks to be breaking down.
With how completely helpless he looked the 1st day I went up to see him -- just these little things are tremendous steps in the right direction.

Thank you to everyone who kept him in your prayers.

He was taken out of the ICU yesterday and they are letting him walk around his room. They have stabilized his oxygen levels and said if he continues to improve as he has been, they could go home in 24 hours.
What he ended up having was something called Subcutaneous Emphysema. The chief of staff for the hospital came in while I was there and asked his parents if they could have pictures of the daily progression, as it is something he had never seen before. They want to use his case in their next pulmonary specialists conference.
It was honestly the worst thing I've ever seen in my life. His face swelled up and looked like a basketball (he couldn't even open his eyes) and his neck was at least twice its regular size. His chest and shoulders looked like he was on a steroids they were so blown up and he is a skinny as a rail 5 year old.
It is amazing what those doctors were able to do to help him once they figured out exactly where and what the problem was.
Thank you all for the prayers -- I know the mom and dad are very appreciative, as am I.
