How many pieces are missing from the Charlotte Hornets to become a serious playoff threat in the east plus a finals contender in the future?

I am curious this Charlotte Hornets team has been exciting to watch but they just aren’t really getting it done vs great teams surprisingly they got blown out by a bad Sacramento team by giving up 140 points. LaMelo is definitely a star and it’s scary he’s only 20 as great he is playing right now. Terry Rozier, Miles Bridges, Gordon Hayward are all great players too. Are the Hornets missing a top Power Forward and Elite Center you think will it be awhile before they get this in a future draft perhaps?

Tough.

They have a nice young core led by Ball and Bridges. Should be enough to get them to the playoffs, maybe even this season.

But in this league, you typically need an MVP caliber superstar and another star or 2, + a roster filled with 8-9 good complimentary pieces.

Maybe Melo can be the number 1 and Bridges the 2 on a contender in time, but they got a long way to go yet.

Good solid core. Not likely to draft another star so the hope is that Melo and Bridges show enough that maybe you can sign somebody, but that will be difficult with so much money committed to Hayward and Rozier.

So, short answer, Hornets are most likely to top out as a solid playoff team and it will be tough to add that difference maker free agent. So you are betting on Melo blossoming into an MVP level player for Charlotte to take the next step.

They’re the worst thing you can be in the NBA. They’re not good enough to be a contender and they’re not bad enough to be in the lottery. They are going to have to get lucky and find a Kawhi or Giannis with a mid first round pick.

yup, i would've sold high on GH.

They had chances to move him.

They need to accumulate more picks to try and make a big trade when they get a chance.

I do think Ball can be that #1.

I love Bouk filling a bucket getter mode in the NBA. Plus having someone who can actually shoot around him should be nice.

Rozier is going to be a key.

To me, moving him and GH and taking your profits would've made sense to avoid no man's land.

But Charlotte seems happy sitting around as a 7 seed and making the playoffs.

Bridges has improved and Ball is going to be a hell of a player in 2-3 years. Hayward has actually been surprisingly very good and efficient this year but he isn't a long-term piece. Other than that...they have little depth and their bigs are below average. They don't have much size or talented bigs.

I don’t buy bridges as a top 3 guy on a title team right now

I’m curious if he still had that upside

That’s why they should be tearing it down to build around ball, bouknight and Kai Jones

I've watched him in a handful of games and he has lot to his game that is promising but I to have my questions but I have no clue what is missing from his game tbh. Really solid defender, very athletic, improved/solid shooter, etc. Charlotte is missing that #2 and they are still 2-3 years away. I can buy Bridges as a #3 but they need that #2 and they need depth. Actually a guy with Mobley's game would fit perfect. PJ Washington is just a good bench piece but nothing special even though @HurricaneDij39 believes he is more.

Yeah.

He’s solid but nothing crazy, special.

Washington is a good small ball 5 off the bench yes. A nice specialist

The right contender should get him

Yeah and you need special players to pull off small ball. Washington has Beal and they have pretty good depth. Ball is still too young and other players don't stand out. Borderline playoff team, watching this team they are very exciting but not quite there yet.

Once LeBron retires, this whole "needing multiple superstars" theory will die faster than a blink of an eye.

That said Charlotte needs a big. Plumlee is nothing more than a stopgap. They may experiment with P.J. at center but he's a little undersized and may need a trade before coming due for an extension...

They traded a first to get Kai Jones this year

Where in my post did I say you needed multiple superstars?

You need 1 for sure. Then you need at least 1 other star as a support player. And if Melo doesn’t reach that level the Hornets won’t contend.

And LOL at your notion that LeBron retiring is going to change that. Unless the NBA collective bargaining drastically changes the power dynamic back to favor owners, players are going to team up and it will continue to take multiple stars to contend.

And if we are being honest, it really always has. In my lifetime, there haven’t been more than a couple teams to win titles without multiple stars.

Pistons are the only one I can think of.

Even Toronto, siakam was a star that year

This was going on way before Lebron, it just works differently now, for many different reasons.

So the Charlotte Hornets are like 5-7 years away you think from being a serious playoff contender in the eastern conference I won’t go any farther than that a finals contender I know will be quite awhile but do you see MJ also staying as well or will we see a new owner eventually?
