it all depends on how long Glendale is willing to keep writing checks.

they now are not buying time until the can close on an owner (even though the owner was trying to line his pockets beyond belief in the deal). They are now waiting until sucker #3 or 4 comes to town. The NHL really has to look at alternatives to move the team if those opportunities are real.

other than KC (don't know about market or owner there), Quebec city needs some time to get an arena in shape, as would Hamilton. Don't know that there is a ready market like WPG was, so moving someone next season might be tough unless one of the above gets cracking pretty quickly. The map has been laid out by the True North group, though.

They're locked and loaded for next season thanks to the City of Glendale. All bets are off for 2012-2013 though.

Alright guys, thanks for the info!

I can understand the concern for Portland not filling an 18,000 seat arena because many don't understand the Portland market. If we have a team, or a team moves here we support them big time, we will fill the seats. The Portland Timbers, who are a soccer team and Portland by no means is a soccer city had a loyal following of about maybe 1,500-4,000 Timber fans before they got bumped up to MLS. Since their move to MLS Jeld-Wen Field has been sold out and is one of the most hostile environments in soccer.

The Blazers have a current sellout streak at the Rose Garden. Not sure if it is still intact but it was recent and spanned for over a year or so. Selling out every home game. Rose Garden is also known to be a rowdy place for visiting teams.

Portland had the Lumberjax a pro Lacrosse team. Again, Portland is definately not a known LAX city and really lacrosse isn't that big out here on the west coast or in the state of Oregon, but it produced a decent crowd and had a good following.

I would have no doubt that with just the Portland market itself that it would hold a hockey team just fine, then you add in all the hockey fans around Oregon and Washington and I am sure you would have trouble getting into a game.

As far as the Rose Garden, it is a relatively new arena, very nice and it was recently remodeled. Suites are also great.

I think the league will push for KC. They have an arena ready to go. The only problem is the arena makes more money without a team than they probably would with one.

I am going to toss this out without really believing it. Vegas might be thrown out there again. I know the negatives: Vegas is a town where many people work at night: too many other things that cost big bucks: don't want players around gambling.
I am just thinking that if they put a team there the Phx market isn't lost for tv and many people would make a weekend road trip out of it. Many fans of other teams may do the same thing. I know it would fail after 5-10 years but you never know what this league will do.

The thing is finding an owner. Here please take this product, the market here sucks, the previous owner sucks, we ran one potential owner out of town, the next potential owner changed his mind once he saw the books, the next one got tired of people in the city filing lawsuits, so now we want you and we want you to keep the team here. Did I mention the market here sucks? sorry I should have skipped that part.

The fact that Vegas would fail leads me to believe that it's right at the top of Bettman's list of relocation possibilities (after he bleeds millions more dollars desperately trying to keep the Coyotes in Ponicks of course).

Jerry Bruckheimer is a big hockey fan who was making waves a few years ago about bringing a hockey team to Vegas. However, it's a non-starter until an arena is built (much like Seattle).

Winterhawks bring in, what... 4,000 per game? at $15 average seat (I'm guessing),
is a long, long ways from filling an 18,000 seat building at $60 or more.
as Phoenix has learned, there is a difference between "population" and "population that cares about NHL".

don't know much about the arena (luxury boxes, upgrades in the past 20 years). It's a big plus that Allen owns the building though, if he's the guy that would be involved.

Portland would support the NHL & ownership wouldn't be an issue. If Allen didn't want to own a team Mr. Nike can make it work. The Trail Blazers have always drawn well. The same would be said for the Coyotes franchise if it was moved to Portland.

I guess the question for Paul Allen would be which city would he prefer to put a team, Portland or Seattle?

I can't find the source anymore (real reliable, of me huh :L), but I read something recently that speculated that the NHL might have to amend its own rules and regulations and the majority of the existing franchise agreements if they wanted to put a team in Vegas.

Since it's a bit of a Boy's Club, it's a bit hard to know what's in all of the charters and what-not, but this article was implying that there's specific clauses in a lot of the team charters specifically stating that Las Vegas cannot be considered as a relocation option and that the league rules (which the BOG could change obviously) also prohibits a team in LV.

Speculated also that it could happen if the BOG wanted it enough, but that the legal fees to amend all of the charters and the special clauses that would have to be in the LV charter would be prohibitively expensive.

here is the issue. Paul Allen would most likely pick Seattle for his city of choice for an NHL team because currently Seattle has no winter sports team. You combine with nothing for people in Seattle to do in the winter with the population difference Seattle has over Portland and Seattle looks like the better choice. The only negative for Seattle up there is I don't think Allen owns an arena up in Seattle like he does the Rose Garden. But then again Allen knows Portland fans very well and know they would be loyal and dedicated to their hockey team. Should be interesting if he gets in the talks.
