I posted about this in a thread in the offseason, not sure of the one, they were many.He is who I thought he would be...Upset( flipping off people) and not prepared because he didn't study the playbook. I'm waiting for his angry speech that he wasn't given enough time to learn the plays.:L

The ideal situation for any rookie QB would be to sit for 1 season & learn. The Browns are so desparate for a QB that Manziel will probably be forced to play early on this season because Hoyer stinks. The fact is Manziel is a media darling. They love him for some unknown reason. Bortles will be a much better NFL QB. I thought Manziel would be pretty good going into the draft. I've changed my mind due to his size, lack of arm strength & accuracy. Manziel will likely be a bust. Being drafted by Cleveland hurt him greatly. They have no idea how to develop QB's.

If the Browns start out 0 and 3, the fans will be clamoring for Johnny football

This may just end up being worse for the Browns. You know any time Hoyer makes a mistake people are going to be calling for Manziel.

If nothing else Johnny has been good PR for the team. I find myself more interested in the team and am hoping they start having success no matter who is QB. I don't know why Johnny is so much of interest but it's good for Cleveland and they will fill the stadium.

The most glaring problem I saw with JFF - it was more than obvious HE CAN'T READ A DEFENSE.

He's not even CLOSE to Hoyer.....stats be damned. The Skins didn't even disguise the fact they were blitzing.....ran nothing exotic......and on 3rd and long, he was facing 8 in the box, and STILL couldn't tell it was a blitz.

As long as this is the case he has no chance of succeeding in the NFL. He has a live arm, but so far that's it. He's proven fairly quickly that he isn't fast enough to break contain or get the edge on starting rush ends and LBs. He can't skate by on athletic talent like he did in college, or throw the ball up for grabs to Mike Evans and get completions.

He actually has to learn how to play his position. This entire season will tell you all you need to know about his ability to play or not.

1st point in bold...I would have to cut him a little slack there...I'm sure he knew a blitz was coming if 8 were in the box on 3rd and long...In that situation a seasoned vet might not know whose coming, and from where...now if he didn't even have a hot read in play, all on the QB, or the WR didn't read the blitz and recognize he was the hot read...can't throw that on JM entirely.

Assuming he puts in the time in film study I think we'll get better recognizing that...but your second point in bold is why I don't think he'll be the long term answer in CLE. Vick was able to buy maybe 3 yrs on his legs, RG3...1 yr...it's doubtful that JM will get an entire year.

I think this was clearly always going to be the plan unless JFF pulled a Russell Wilson and just blew everyone away in training camp. Clearly that hasn't happened.

Hoyer should be a fine QB. He showed some ability last year and hopefully he can build on that this year. He has looked terrible in the preseason so far, but I think with more 1st team snaps he will get back into form. Remember, he did miss a lot of time due to the knee injury and is probably pretty rusty. He's missed a lot of passes in his preseason games and he hasn't been getting a ton of snaps to get into a groove.

I think the announcement should help the 1st team offense gel a little better...problem is that Gordon is likely out for the season, so it might be a good idea to get him off the 1st team offense for the games too.

Hoyer is nothing special. 1 good game in his career. I don't think it will take long for him to be holding the clipboard.

I'm sure the Steelers will be favored. During the telecast Monday night one of the announcers mentioned that Elway was the last rookie QB to lead his team to a win at Pittsburgh. Probably won't be enough for Cleveland to get a W, but I think that going with Hoyer was the right call.

Steve DeBerg finished that game. Elway was 1-8 passing for 14 yards.

The fact that the Browns drafted Manziel when they did is why the Browns are the Browns.

Ideal for any rookie..agreed but he was hyped as a starter for the Browns. Many teams have had rookies make an inpact and not holding a clipboard. For those stats just look for yourself. The main reason he is not starting is because he didn't study the playbook.

I think you are confused about good PR vs bad PR. You are interested because it is similar to a car crash or train wreck...not about the talent of this kid.

All he had to do was show up on time, not have pictures of him doing rails, and not flipping off the opponents and he would have been the starter. Yet he couldn't do it. He couldn't beat out a career backup coming off ACL surgery. And so far he can't play either. I don't see a future in this guy.

With their second pick in the first round

Not sure I get the slam here

Blatently untrue. Hoyer was pegged as the starter from day 1. JFF would have had to have made a huge impact to win that spot.

JM is doing exactly as I expected to this point. I was not one of his fans before draft but I'm not ready to pronounce him dead yet. He is a rookie that with one wave of the finger, proved he is not ready to start. He has already proven that he is immature. I don't know if any of you remember what it was like at that age but what I remember is that unless a young man decides to grow up on his own (or gets sent to Viet Nam) He will continue to be a child.
Many guys never grow up! (I know because I have dated all your ex-wives!)

Hate to burst your bubble but everything I said was blatantly true. Browns didn't announce starter until this week for a reason. Of course the Browns are going to try to take pressure of a 1st round pick but everyone knows they wanted him to take control and earn the starting job. This is how its done everywhere, its coaching 101.

Hoyer hasn't been any better on the field, and will never be a starting QB, he is a backup. Manziel could have come in with a great attitude, showed up early, stayed late, stayed home and studied a playbook, and showed he had what it takes. Even though his on field play has not been good he would have showed the Browns he can be a leader and the future of the Browns, and the Browns would have gotten what they hoped for when they used him with a 1st round pick- their starting QB.

Unfortunately, he has done neither.....
