Hired in 2009 as GM of our team, Bruce Allen has lasted longer than any current GM of any other professional sports team in Washington. Under his leadership the team has amassed a woeful 45-79-1 record and only 3 winning seasons in that time frame. One of those seasons which fairly could be attributed to Mike Shanahan who was granted control in 2012 adds to the futility that Allen has brought. Contrast that with his predecessor, Vinny Cerrato who served in the same capacity from 2002 -2009 who's 52-65 record was cause for his dismissal and you have to wonder what's keeping Allen in place?
Now it would be unfair to other posters to not mention the botched Kirk Cousins contract situation, and I don't want to turn this into testimony about Allen in that respect because it's hugely important, but not the focus of this thread.
Allen apparently hold some sway in relation to Snyder and his wanting to build a new stadium somewhere, but that's another 8 years or so away and keeping Allen around for that long based upon what he's already done seems a rather cruel thing to do to both the future hopes of this team in advancing towards playoff prominence and its' faithful followers desperate for a winning program.
Allen, son of a legendary NFL head coach, is a cap specialist, and as such, if retained, should be relegated to that task and that task alone. His public utterances are at times embarrassing, his record woeful and the systemic rot that he promised to eliminate, is at best, no better than it was before he took control Scott McCloughan’s tenure here and the promotion of Doug Williams to a near meaningless position says everything one would want to know about organizational dysfunction, something that Allen promised the faithful he'd eliminate on the day that he was hired.
Well, he's failed to deliver anything that was promised and by Washington standards should be sent packing. There doesn't seem to be any indication that such a move is in the making. Maybe in evaluating him what happens on the field is not an issue, after all, he promised that too would change and like everything else, didn't deliver that either. My question is how should Allen be evaluated?
