I'm assuming DH knew this when he offered Sills and maybe it was something that he thought he could correct but couldn't? His upside was tremendous with his size, athleticism, and football IQ and maybe he took a chance. I've read several times that even though QB's fix there mechanics during practice but they tend to revert back to their old habits in live action
There is so much upside in recruiting a kid like Sills. As you noted, bring him in and see if you can work out the chinks of his motion. However, you know there was a hidden motive. The kid is a freak athlete. They had him try out the WR position on the scout team... wink... wink.
He blew away the coaches, and was asked to burn a redshirt to test his skills at WR to help the team win. He excelled in his first game. A true natural...
It is hard to change mechanics. Like you said, when you're under pressure... the old habits return.
Tebow tried like hell to change his motion. Pat White tried like hell...
