He was coming off a strong 2017 campaign, but it was also a pretty BABIP-driven year and he hasn't improved on his very high groundball rates. he's also been making less contact and has become more strikeout prone.

combined with just as many replacement and subreplacement level years as years with at least 1 WAR. And the 2 years with multiple WAR were both huge BABIP outliers.

Somehow we were both wrong about this. lol.
Padres signing Machado is still surprising, and even with a down year I trust he'll really help them for years. As for Hosmer, I want to believe he can get back to his 2017 season or even close to it but I'm not as optimistic about him.

Without the Hosmer contract maybe they try harder to trade for Mookie because there is more money available to re-sign him or just have a chance to sign him in free agency.
