I get the sense that these people were bidding against themselves on this.

I may have to dedicate some time tomorrow to listen to some local radio. See if there is any defense of this signing.

Cause I certainly can’t think of any.

I agree, and yet is it possible these guys whose job it is to handle this are just so stupid? I guess so...

The only way out is if they think their young prospects are actually going to compete right now or next year, and they overpaid to get a vet in there to lead them?

That contract is just silly. Odds of him actually being worth it have to be somewhere between 5-10%.

System is weak at 1B and LF, and this nabs both holes I guess? This is just weird.
I don’t know the Pads system, so I can’t speak to their depth, but the face of the franchise (pre-Hosmer) was a 1B who has shown he is not good in the OF and has stated he wants to stay at 1B.

There is not an angle I have heard yet that makes this signing make any sense.

My default setting is to believe that pro sports front offices know more than me and they make smart decisions (even if they don’t always pan out or if I never see the logic of the move).

But then there are some orgs that really have never earned that benefit of the doubt...

Yeah, I mostly am shooting from the hip guessing what the Padres are thinking internally. It's all perplexing, but hey, not my problem. Hope the Padres do well for Bolts' sake though.

I don't get to use this very often. Only when a San Diego team screws up. Since there is only one team left, I had to.

I think this video is a good example of how South Park affects itself a little by using real current events so often. This is still funny and it probably will be funny 20 years from now, but I can't help but think it loses a little something when the person watching doesn't know what's being referenced. When you make jokes about major events like 9/11 or presidential elections you're probably pretty safe but I bet that most people watch that and laugh without thinking "holy shit, that's a Kony joke!".

Anyway, back on topic. I guess people still hire Boras for some reason, eh?

Boras is a douche, no doubt. But he gets his players PAID.

If you want a hand-holder, you don’t sign with Boras.

If you want to be able to afford to pay someone to hold your hand, you sign with Boras.

no doubt this is an awful deal for the padres... But lets not pretend anyone wants to go to a team like the padres... for them to get anyone they have to overpay....

I just don’t understand what they’re thinking.

I’m sure they could do both but man you’re in primer positok to sign a premium talent like a machado next year. Maybe a sp too.

And they do this. And Hosmer will be over 30 before the prospects are ready to do anything.

This guy thinks we are all wrong. Something about Hosmer being a great baserunner, his fielding is underrated statistically (he has won gold gloves) and the contract is backloaded or something.
I'm still not buying it. I guess the one thing Hosmer has is that he started his career young so he's only 27 (will be 28 this season) instead of 30 or 31 like some free agents.

Eric Hosmer striking it rich in San Diego is crazy enough to work

The contract is extremely front loaded.

It’s 5/105 with a 3/39 opt in.

And I will at it’s possible that 1b d is underrated because 1b are more graded for recording while the stars tend to favor range.
