all the "experts" are saying it was north south ... thus not rule 48 blindside ... therefore targetting of the head doesnt come into play ... check the nhl produced video i posted showing legal hits ... head shots are still not illegal on there own

I said mild, didn't mention rule 48, and it was mostly a joke b/c someone called it "clean." Chillax.

doesnt matter jstew not sure why argue it. the Bruins fans will have their vision of it as will the anti canuck fans and then us. I think it was just a late hit not blindside. Im ok with a suspension as the respect to prone players is almost gone but I believe that Rome did not intend to injure or be malice in anyway

Rule 48 or not, he circled back to hot a player in the head and the puck was loooong fine, had they been on the same path the entire time then its a different story, he came back to hit him

thats what dmen do all the time to stand guys up at the blue line ... the only prob with this north south hit is it was mega-late

I think Mattola is mostly right, as a neutral fan, here's my scorecard...

Late - Very late
Head - Most definitely
Blindside - Not to Rule 48, but certainly prone
Intent - Impossible to know, I would guess he meant to just check him hard, and Horton's head lowered slightly at the end and that became the primary point of contact. I don't believe he meant to hit him in the head, but I have no way of knowing. I think Rome was going for a "big" hit, but not necessarily a "head" hit.

The difference between a dirty hit and a "hockey play" can be a tenth of a second in changing angles, all happening at high speed. I think a lot of these discussions are good, but I think fans too often assume terrible things about intent of other players, which I try to give the players the benefit of the doubt on b/c I think few guys in the league really WANT to hurt other players.

Besides the fact that it was a mild blindside, to the head, and very late, yes, it was totally clean.

how's this for precedent.....

Zdeno Chara - late hit on Paciaretty on march 8. Resulted in serious concussion.
Chara received 5 minute major for interference and a game misconduct. sound familiar?

also, Chara did NOT receive any further discipline. just fwiw.

what did Rome in the interview say Yep I wanted to do that and have his head hit off the ice. I wanted him off a stretcher.

what I think this is that the NHL saw the chance here to make a message on a 6th dman on a team that has depth and to show that they are TOUGH in their decisions and to take some powder out of this Keg.

oh well. harsh but it is what it is

yep

Id like to hear the explanation by Murphy on whether he saw it as a blindside lateral or north south or was the 4 games solely for it being mucho-late

clean? lmao

no elbows brother trust me i know it sucks it was late as hell....nothing you can write down for a rule..its all a judgement call for the players piece of paper is not going to stop this sort of stuff you have seconds to react...players need to keep their heads up at all times after a shot or a pass...they need to learn to brace themselfs some how...

IMO, the hit went from dirty to very dirty by combining too nasty elements. It was obviously late AND he did target the head area. That's cheap. Either of the two alone is probably just a 2 minute minor, but this was egregious.

It was not a "blindside" hit but he went at a guy's head when he he was vulnerable. To me that is unacceptable.

There should be mandatory supplementary disciplinary action for players that target the head during the commission of an infraction.
