Both X coaches said they would want to coach this team So if Harbaugh is gone who would you take?

I would take gruden because I think he would be a good fit with Kap. Only negative he has been out of football for awhile. Holmgren wouldn't be a bad option but his time might have passed. Either option would be fine with me.

Usually former coaches have an out clause in their network contracts if they go back to coaching so Gruden's Monday night deal won't be a factor if he wants to go back to the NFL. I know Cowher had one and Billick did too. I'm not sure if Dungy did since he's been pretty clear he's retired. I'm not sure about Gruden, but if not the networks not gonna keep him around if he really doesn't want to be there. They'd only have a problem if he wanted to go to another network.

Out of Holmgren or Gruden I would go with Gruden.

And Harbaugh has 1 year left on his contract so what's your point?

The title of this thread is Gruden or Holmgrem. Yes, Harbaugh has one year left, but everyone is saying he is as good as gone. Even Miacco was saying that so we are just looking to the future. I actually believe the most 49er fans would want Harbaugh back but we don't have a say in it.

Like a previous poster stated, Gruden is signed until 2021. He likes being in the booth. Holmgren, though 67, could be an interesting choice. He can certainly help Kap as he was the QB coach when Young was the QB. Most pundits are saying that Harbaugh will be heading to Ann Arbor, but I think he will stay in the NFL. There are going to be several openings next season (Jets, Giants, Raiders, Bears), but my wish that he stays with the Niners minus Roman.

Where did you hear Gruden wanted to coach this team?

He said it during a 49er game. He said he would love to coach a team like the 49ers with the talent they have. He also has said multiple times that 49ers would be a team he would come back for. Now Im not saying he is going to throw his name in the ring for the job i know he just resigned with ESPN but if he ever wants to get back into coaching this will be a great time to come back.

Gruden has always talked highly of the 49ers.

He isn't going back to college. He wants to stay in the NFL. After almost winning a Super Bowl I can't see him going backwards.

Not if the money is right. Michigan has been bad the past few years and Harbaugh could be the one who can resurrect this storied program. I read from another thread that Michigan is offering him six years 48 mil. That's a lot of money.

there were more than a few articles that characterize Harbaugh as competitive, not about money. If it was about money, he'd have signed with Miami instead of SF.

anyway, if he was going back to Michigan, it would be more (not only) about the challenge of resurrecting that school.

He signed either a 6 or 7 year extension, he isn't coaching anytime soon.

Big difference between 1 and 6 or 7.

Holmgren wouldn't wear out his welcome like Gruden would.

Maybe there is an escape clause in that contract.

I dont really want either of them. Definitely dont want Gruden. Holmgren I can get behind if he is a Coach only and he stays away from making personnel decisions leaving that job to Baalke.

Totally agree with that. I really think any coach should have complete control over personnel decisions. It seems to be fail alot more than it works. Having a say is ok.

But being one of the highest paid coaches in the college ranks would definitely massage his ego. Money is not everything, but it sure speaks loudly.
