Maddux for many reasons ,mostly consistency. Johnson was incredible no question about that. I'll recite my favorite Maddux stat that will never be touched or even remotely approached again in the history of the game. Maddux won 15 or more games for 17 consecutive seasons. This included 2 strike shortened seasons. There are only 6 pitchers in the HoF who STARTED 15 or more for 15 consecutive seasons. It's an incredible record no one will ever come anywhere near. He was simply the best pitcher anyone has seen who's alive today.
Well that's just not true.

if I were a batter I'd rather face Randy. he was more imposing, terrifying if you will, but if you could get the timing down you have a chance. Maddux would be more pinpoint and could just make you look silly.

Unless you were John Kruk, then Randy could make you look both terrified and silly :pound:

men went to church when they knew they were facing RJ. He was different

don Sutton
Nolan Ryan
steve Carlton
Greg Maddux
tom glavine
tom seaver
walter Johnson

wasn't too hard to disprove. I only checked eight pitchers before I had my seven. Bert Blyleven was the only one to not make 15 straight years of 15 starts.

Cy Young
Don Sutton
Phil Niekro
Steve Carlton
Gaylord Perry
Tom Glavine
Walter Johnson
Warren Spahn
Tom Seaver
Early Wynn
Robin Roberts
Fergie Jenkins

And I stopped after a while, I'm sure there are more.

I find it interesting that the advanced stats people(who only look at the advanced stats) are not picking Randy Johnson in this comparison... Randy had a better ERA+ and better JAWS(which is the WAR stat for careers)... I mean dont they love to argue that Wins is a team stat, ERA doesnt take into account ball park adjustments, and the fact that Maddux has only pitched in the NL...

A large part of which might be because Maddux has 900 more innings. I'd still take RJ by a hair though.

Yes, but Randy Johnson pitched longer into the games he played...

It's a tie.

I'll break the tie this way...

Over the span of both their careers the best team anyone put on a field was the 96-01 Yankees. Maddux was 1-2 against them in the 96 and 99 WS, Johnson went 3-0 against them in 2001.

I'll go with Johnson.

Small sample but you can flip a coin with these two and not lose.

Which may partially be affected by Maddux logging all those extra innings. The more innings you throw over time, the more likely you'll be tiring out...so Maddux over his last few years wasn't going deep into games likely because of that reason (his last 101 career starts he averaged 5.96 innings/start).

Maddux through 4,100 innings (about the same as Johnson had in his career) averaged a slightly higher innings per start. How much of that may have been due to league differences, I don't know.

I never understood why Randy Johnson's name rarely came up with steroid speculation.

Both had great careers but I would probably go with Maddux just because I'm pretty sure he was clean.

I never realized how similar their late career success was until now.

Between '99 - '04 (age 35-40) Randy Johnson won 4 straight Cy Young awards and finished 2nd once whereas between '00 - '04 (age 35-39) Barry Bonds won 4 straight MVP award and finished 2nd once. At least Barry Bonds had success early in his career. Johnson was basically a middle of the rotation guy.

:omg: Ace of the Seattle staff that saved the team in Seattle. Huge trade when he went to Houston for a late season run.

Give me a break...

Before 1999, Johnson had already:
-1 Cy Young, with 3 other seasons finishing in the top 3
-129 career ERA+
-4 seasons of 290+ K's, and 7 seasons of 200 K's
-4 seasons of 18+ wins

Not to mention, from 1993-1998 he had a 156 ERA+, 1.12 WHIP while averaging 250+ K's a season

If you think that's middle of the rotation stuff, I think you have a severe misperception of what a middle of the rotation pitcher looks like.
