Two guys that most of us can recall virtually their entire careers. Two guys who both won 4 Cy Youngs in a row. Two guys that both won one World Series. Two guys with nearly identical career WAR.

And yet two guys with very different styles of dominance.

You should still be able to if you hit the Thread tools button on the first post. I just tried it on the Clemente Kaline thread and it still allowed it.
Perfect thank you

It's very close, as I can see solid arguments for either...Maddux has roughly 900 more career innings, and Johnson pitched more than 50% of his innings in the AL.

Both have 4 ERA titles a piece, 7 seasons of 240+ innings each, an ERA+ in the 130s, a WHIP IN THE mid 1.1s, and the career WARs are nearly identical.

I'll say Johnson by a hair...I like his 'extended' prime (1993-2004) a bit more than Maddux' (1992-2002).

I was curious as to how the Hall of Stats had them ranked and, not surprisingly, they are nearly identical there as well. Maddux with a 217 Hall Rating and Johnson with a 216.

Not to go off on a tangent, but how would you rank these three: Greg Maddux, Randy Johnson, and Tom Seaver.

Id take Maddux, innings. Randy Johnson was great in almost all facets though. Once he turned the corner in '93 and stopped walking guys like crazy.

Much closer than i first thought... But i would still have to give it to maddux... Johnson was actually better at their best, but maddux had a longer more healthy career... Not to mention i can never forgive Johnson for giving up on seattle like that...

But overall Maddux had a better ERA and a better WHIP, with over 100 more starts, even though johnson has the better JAWS and ERA+...

Had he kept the mullet things might be different. (Every great player eventually gives up on the Mariners.)

Can you blame him for wanting an extension after the season he had in '97? Especially after being hurt most of the '96 season. Free agency was coming up and the Mariners didn't extend him, so he was traded.

I have to go with Maddux simply because he exemplifies what a "pitcher" should be in my mind. That said, if I had to pick one to pitch a Game 7, I would have to pick RJ.

Maddux for many reasons ,mostly consistency. Johnson was incredible no question about that. I'll recite my favorite Maddux stat that will never be touched or even remotely approached again in the history of the game. Maddux won 15 or more games for 17 consecutive seasons. This included 2 strike shortened seasons. There are only 6 pitchers in the HoF who STARTED 15 or more for 15 consecutive seasons. It's an incredible record no one will ever come anywhere near. He was simply the best pitcher anyone has seen who's alive today.

I would take a "crafty location pitcher" over a heater throwing guy ANYDAY.

I tend to go that way myself BUT we have to admit Johnson was different. He was downright scary. In his prime he was the best heater type guy I've ever seen. A juiced up Clemens could never on his best day throw with Johnson. He dominated people like we don't see and haven't seen

One of God's creatures "failed" to get out of the way of a Johnson heater...

if I were a batter I'd rather face Randy. he was more imposing, terrifying if you will, but if you could get the timing down you have a chance. Maddux would be more pinpoint and could just make you look silly.

Unless you were John Kruk, then Randy could make you look both terrified and silly :pound:
