Injuries have killed this team for the simple fact that behind the starters you have little in replacement level players.

Our LB corps wouldn't be no.1 starters on any other team in this league outside of injury.

That is basically the GM's fault for not finding talent. Dude has had 4 drafts and off-seasons.
No reason whatsoever to give him reigns to a top 3 pick in the NFL draft.
Especially when he is irresponsible enough to burn a top 8 pick on a fuuuuuuuuuuucking tight end.
A TE that runs 4.7 ,at that.
At least when San Fran picked Vernon Davis at #6 a long time ago. The guy ran 4.3 as a freak athlete.
That pick might be worse than the Ebron pick and that is saying something.

same for me regarding Garrett as much as the possibility of Ron Rivera. The latter has had 3 winning seasons and I get he helped his team get to a super-bowl but that team always lacked even a decent OL. McCaffrey is one of the few RB who can create on his own with his superb vision and extremely quick feet

The thing I learned about Caldwell is that being a Head coach is more than X's and O's. It's about being a leader of men. Let the coordinator's do all that. Pattycakes can't control the locker room.

Notes: Lions among most penalized teams in NFL

According to NFLPenalties.com, the Lions are most commonly called for offensive holding penalties, with 23 of their 100 flags called on that infraction (fourth most in the NFL). And just in case you were wondering, the Green Bay Packers are tied for the ninth-fewest penalties in the league and tied for 10th in fewest offensive holding penaltie

Back to back seasons of the worst attendance in Ford Field history prove the Lions don't even care if they make money.
Something like 86% of the TV Contracts is divided up by 32 teams.

The Draft Network How To Fix The Detroit Lions Over The 2020 NFL Offseason

the Lions' issue is fundamentally one of ownership,

the symptomatic issues of the problem. That, inherently, is the issue with trying to mimic the Patriots.

impossibly difficult to accomplish without Bill Belichick, but when you fail, you're stuck with a bunch of players who make little sense in another system, thus lengthening your eventual rebuild.

iOL Graham Glasgow

iDL A'Shawn Robinson/iDL Mike Daniels (one of these two needs to be re-signed and Daniels health is a concern, imo.

THREE (nope. just one of these) FREE AGENTS TO TARGET

EDGE Kyle Van Noy (TDN Analyst Kyle Crabbs

EDGE Arik Armstead (TDN Analyst Joe Marino)

The Draft Network 5-Play Prospect: Free Agent Arik Armstead (this guy)

Armstead isn't getting anywhere near 20M avg per year. He'll be lucky to see 14M-15M per, imo

RB Jordan Howard (TDN Analyst Benjamin Solak)

Blame Game: Who Is To Blame For The 2019 Detroit Lions

No, the Lions did not hire Belichick. But they fell into the trap which so many teams have gleefully stumbled during the cold reign of the Patriots’ dynasty: believing they could replicate the success without the key cog.

The Lions hired Patricia because Quinn knew the players the Patriots liked, and Patricia knew the system that maximized them. They could build the defense in Belichick's image, just as Eric Mangini did in New York (23-25 across three seasons) and Romeo Crennel did in Cleveland (24-40 across four seasons) and Kansas City (4-15 across two seasons).

The Patriots’ defense cannot be copied and pasted, and that's because Belichick cannot be replicated or even imitated. He is so good, he reloads coordinators without a drop off in his units, while those same coordinators flounder outside of his shadow and the league remains Belichick’s for the taking.
