He is still cheaper than all the other names on this list and still has not made that transition.

If forced to pretend these players could ONLY play 1B or DH, I would reevaluate. As it is, though, 1B is only a potential scenario for him at some point in the future. He is currently a 75% catcher.
Well, that was just my reason for including him. Having him on the list made it an easy choice for you, I suppose. :thumb:

And how much of the 75% catcher had to do with Belt getting hurt the last half of the season as opposed to where the Giants will manage him in the near future?

I dont think the FO wants him to play more than 110, 120 games behind the plate. With Brown and Sac as backups, I think he will sit more if Belt has the breakout season (knock on wood) we are hoping for, rather than play 1B.

"Last half" is just a bit of an exaggeration no?

How the answer is anyone besides Posey is baffling to me. The youngest, with a reasonable contract, who can still catch for the next couple of years. Oh, and he can mash.

Without actually looking it up, yes...yes it was. However, Posey has played quite a bit of 1B over the last couple of years in large part because of the various Belt injuries.

I think he should be the team's permanent DH when we are playing AL teams. Otherwise, I agree wholeheartedly.

I can buy that explanation for 2014 but I'm not sure it would apply to any other season. Belt really hasn't missed as much time to injury as you seem to be thinking, and a lot of Posey's games at 1b have actually just been games where Belt's been given the day off.

Belt had at least 1 DL stint towards the end of last season for a concussion that I can remember right off the top of my head because Posey played primarily 1B down the stretch. 2014 Belt played maybe, what, like a third of the games in the season because he had a rash of shit hitting the fan all year long it seemed. That makes two years where he missed an assload of time. Admittedly 2014 was worse, but I find it interesting that you would say "I'm not sure it would apply to any other season." when it SHOULDN'T apply given that Posey was 26 years old two years ago. This convo was geared towards the Giants handling of Posey over the past couple of seasons and how they should handle Posey moving forward, not Belt's career injury history.

Edit: Belt played 61 games in 2014 and 137 games in 2015. That's missing 126 games over two years, 101 in 2014 and 25 in 2015.

This one is easy for me

Adrian Gonzalez

Shortest investment in terms of years

Still highly productive player that is still good to play 150 game a year

Every other player on that list will be atrocious investments when you get to the later years on that deal, if they arent already there

Belt actually wasn't on the DL at all last year I don't believe, but that was partly procedural... his concussion issue happened so late in the season that rosters had already expanded to 40. He didn't miss an "assload" of time due to injury, he went down in late September and only missed the last 10 or so Giant games due to the concussion. The rest of his sit-downs were just manager decisions.

But you're right, Belt really isn't the subject here and this discussion is getting kind of nitpicky.

Its not our money, though...

3-5 WAR for the next 3 years followed by a couple years of 1-2 WAR followed by a couple years of dead money. There are worse fates.

Understood, but take it from a Yankees fan, those type of deals can and will probably handcuff your team from making other moves years down the road

Assuming a Free Agent WAR costs approx 8M...

Cabrera - 240M remaining, 30M/8M club option in '24, 30M club option in '25. That is 248M guaranteed through 2024. He would need to produce 31 WAR by 2023 to break even (just south of 4 WAR/year)

Pujols - 165M remaining through 2021. No options. He would need to produce approx 21 WAR, or approx 3.5 WAR/year.

Votto - 192M remaining with a 20M/7M club option in 2024. 199M guarenteed. He would need approx 25 WAR, or just over 3 WAR per season.

Fielder - 96M remaining through 2020, no options. 12 FA WAR, 3 WAR/year.

Mauer - 69M through 2018, no options. Approx 8.5 FA WAR, just under 3 WAR per.

Posey - 127M through 2021 with a 22M/3M team option for 2022. 16.5 WAR, or about 2.6 per year.

Gonzalez - 64M through 2018, no options. 8 FA WAR, or about 2.7 per.

Howard - 25M in 2016 with a 23M/10M club option for '17. He needs about 4.5 WAR this year to "break even".
