Well he was just trying to figure out what Anna's last name was. Nothing stupid about that.

Sorry Dash, but if you can't see the Oilers are going to be a force in a few years, you are just being biased.

That Oilers defense and goaltending is still looking pretty scary (as in scary bad). You can't win games 7-5 anymore like the 1980's. Also, I'm curious to see how much of this team can stay together when all these cheap ELC's expire. Finally, I have faith in Lowebellini to continue to make a mess of things in Edmonton.

Sure, I'm biased, but I think I also have some pretty good points in the above paragraph.

I'm with you I just don't see them being very good for a while.

Yes the Oilers will get better.Unfortunately there are a shitload of other teams that are already there, and continuing to improve.

L.A,Buffalo,Philly,St.Louis are a few teams that will be better this year, and in the next few years IMO.

Nah, the Oilers and the Islanders will rise up to become consistent playoff level teams sometime in the next ten years. There's some law where you are only allowed to be bad for x number of years before moving up, and those two teams have been down there for a while.

The Wild, too.

the Oilers, for how shitty they are, are still at a $60 million payroll.
and that's with SEVEN entry level deals on the books.

Management are going to have to make some very tough choices in the next 3-4 years,
and if history is a guide, they will all make the wrong ones.

The Oilers have had 2 consecutive 1st overall picks. It's hard to mess those picks up. They have 3 problems. One is defense. They're simply awful on the backend. Two is goaltending. They don't really have one on the roster or in the system at this point that can be called a true #1. I don't know how much Khabby has left, but it doesn't matter with the defense that's in front of him.

Three Lowbellini have done a horrible job building this team. They're so focused on small, speedy forwards. The problem is for the most part they haven't panned out. They traded Captain Canada Ryan Smyth for ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. That 1 trade could have set the franchise up for awhile. Instead it set them back at least 3 years. If management can't get the job done your team is SCREWED.

The three best ways to build a team are:

1) From the net out: you build a deep, skilled and versatile blueline. Ideally you pair this with an above average goalie. Chicago, Nashville and Boston have done this well. Edmonton has not. Gilbert, Whitney and Peckham are no Keith, Seabrook and Co.

2) Down the middle: Center depth that allows at least two very good scoring lines has worked. Pittsburgh, Philly, 1990s Avs, 1990s Wings, current Wings, etc. have shown that this works. RNH looks lie a good piece, but they lack scoring depth down the middle. Anton Lander will never be to RNH as Forsberg was to Sakic. This is based on the Nuge being Sakic-esque, which he won't.

3) Defensive philosophy: You take a good goalie and structure defense around him. In this scheme most of your top-end players are two-way guys, who excel in a defensive system. Boston and the Devils of the last 17 years have done this to a T. The Oilers best players at the moment are purely offensive.

I'm not dumping on the Oilers future, because they have some nice young talent, but they have more holes to fill (prospect wise) than some of the other young teams. Colorado, NYI, Florida and Ottawa are closer to becoming true contenders than the Oilers, IMO.

I am stuck on Edmonton in this year's predictions. I just can't seem to come up with anything that doesn't make me feel like I just kidney punched a retarded fat kid.

I feel the same way after the Sabres portion too, but that one feels okay to me.
