It seems like the only sport in this country where the players truly decide where they are going to play is in the NBA. Look at Lebron, Leonard, Durant, etc......

So Has the role of an NBA GM become extinct?

Yes baseball is somewhat going the way of the NBA but still NBA really seems to be the only league that the players decide where they want to go....

GMs can just sit back and say ok, Do what you want to do.

Only for the superstar players. GMs still need to fill the roster around them with the little remaining salary.

And I know you've been around long enough to include potato salad!

And didn't football start it all when Elway refused to play for Baltimore?

I knew I forgot to add something. It has now been added.

It just seems like this is the only league where so many players are decided and telling teams where they will go.

Yes, Elway did it and Eli did but it seems like it's more in the NBA then any other sport

Maybe because it is the one sport that one player can make such a huge difference.
I mean, if not for LeBron no one would have remebered Cleveland was in the league. Same with Giannis in Milwaukee.

Very true... So does a GM "need" to do as much then? Is there role more limited than other sports?

They need to clear the cap space and have decent enough assets to attract the superstars.
They need to convince them to maybe take a little less in order to be able to fill out the roster so they can make it to the finals. Although you need a superstar (or two), none make it all on their own.
So, yes, you still need a GM and they have to to a lot.

Honestly I think the current players on the team do the convincing (at least as of late). Yes I am sure the GM does there part to convince a player but it seems now a days its more of the players doing it. And when a superstar goes to another team the players are like, "Ok, I'm going there and I don't care about the money" (as much)

I think it's fair to say the star players are taking some of the GM role, so GMs are a little less important in the NBA. But that doesn't mean they are nothing

True, but they certainly appear to be becoming less and less important

And just to be clear, a GM can still make or break a team...especially break one (ask the Knicks)

Only if you are a GM on a small market team. (The Knicks being the exception).

No, because the general managers still have to negotiate the contracts and be ready for the next duo that is going to contact them. It may appear that they are obsolete, but as a person who has audited thousands of large and small companies such as Kawasaki, Mazda Motor Corporation, Security Pacific Bank before they went out of business, I can sure you they are needed.

Having said that though, the players to a strong degree have taken control of the league. The down side here is in my opinion far too many maximum contracts. That has my concern for the future of the NBA

Still needs to evaluate the data - One thing the Knicks did not due - Had they signed Kevin Durant, then Irving would have also signed. 35 million was a small gamble that next year they would have been playoff contenders for the first time in something like 20 years?
