I like Hal Gill's game, certainly not the most glamorous or speedy guy, probably past his prime, but he's a rock in front of his own net.

I just see no room for him at this point. A 38 year old should not take one of the kid's spots.

Timonen-Schenn
Coburn-Gus
Streit-Grossmann
Meszaros-Lauridsen
Gervais-MAB
And then Konan, Manning, Gill

I guess the thinking is that if Gill can still play that would make it easier moving Mez or even possibly Coburn. Either way one of them is probably moving anyway as some of the younger guys will most likely impress in camp.

Gill being invited to camp is more about having options IMHO. He is an experienced hand who can play on the PK and 3rd pairing regularly if needed. Grossmann and Meszaros are both coming back from injuries and in Grossmann's case a concussion.

Gill also gives the Flyers a big defensive defenseman to model NHL play for Lauridsen and Morin in camp. And Gill is/can be mean as a snake on ice.

I think it is really an insurance policy but it could also spell a future move of either Meszaros or Coburn.

The rumor that makes less sense is Dan Cleary being approached about a camp invite.

One thing that I just though of, Gill is not a "Lavvy" uptempo type player by any stretch. He is a pure old time Patrick Division throw back slobber knocker. Bringing him in and not another skooter makes me wonder about the communication between the GM and the coach.

If he earns a spot in camp, I'm perfectly ok with it. He's a guy I always thought would help the flyers. We'll have to see how fit he is though.

A camp invite can never hurt thought IMO.
