History is not on his side.
In the last 10 years, 72 QB's were taken in the 4th round or later.
Of those, the best of the best, the top 6 QB's in terms of Pro Football's career approx value, are:
1.Matt Cassell (44)
2.Ryan Fitzpatrick (44)
3.Kyle Orton (34)
4.Derek Anderson (20)
5.Brad Smith (17)
6.Tyler Thigpen (10)
Murderer's row, right there. He's more likely to be Derek Anderson than Tom Brady.

and still better than Andy Dalton.
A sobering list, to be sure.........
Nevermind..... Romo came out in 2003. He's been in the league for over a decade.
Maybe, but the consensus on Dalton was a 2nd round pick.
AJ wasn't going to go that high.
Take out of that what you will.
I'm not defending Dalton, I'm just stating that anyone thinking that
A: AJ is competing with Dalton is lying to themselves
B: That AJ is, in fact, going to be better than Dalton, the history doesn't exactly back that up, either.
Personally, I would like to have drafted a Murray or Mettenburger, but it is what it is. We'll see if the new focus on running the ball, and limiting Dalton's attempts doesn't help him reduce his turnovers and help him be a bit more efficient. Only time will tell.
If Dalton were in this draft, after his college experience, he would have most likely been drafted after or similarly to AJ Mac. AJ Mac had a better college career. this draft and that one, like apples and oranges.
McCarron is the better QB right now. Andy won his 1st year. AJ could do just the same. He's bigger, stronger, faster. He has post season success and played tougher competition. There's really no comparison.
We'll probably sign Dalton to a 7 year, 100 million dollar extension.
the only way we sign Dalton to such a contract is if he proves himself invaluable.
based on prior experience we'll probably just let AJ ride teh bench and learn the playbook in 2014 (unless someone gets injured, and there might need to be 2 QBs go down)
AJ Mac is the QB of the future here, no logical person can dispute that, unless we draft another QB next season. Which would mean we went 4-12 or some shit.
You are thinking like a rational human being.
The Bengals are going to re-sign him. Take it to the bank. Buy a jersey of #14, because he's not going anywhere.
some different circumstances, but just like Carson didn't go anywhere.
just like we didn't let Boomer retire a year early
just like we held on to shake and blake an extra year before moving on
Bengals don't spend money frivolously.
I think if Dalton wants to stay in Cincinnati, he is going to have to take less money than his agent wants..... Barring a postseason run - which I think we're all aware is unlikely to happen - Dalton has absolutely no leverage. And Mike Brown will have the fans on his side. Our fans won't want Mike to overpay a guy that keeps shitting the bed in big games. Now that AJ McCarron is on the roster, Mike will play hardball.
I'm not saying that AJ is good or will be good..... But he's a great poker chip for negotiations with Dalton. And it only cost a 5th round pick.
