Was never a big Malmsteen fan. The guy has zero restraint or subtlety to his playing......but he could fucking shred. His symphony was actually pretty decent too:

I guess I will have to be the jerk that questions what restraint or subtlety have to do with playing his particular kind of music. The rock/metal stuff anyway. Maybe I am just too big a fan for my own good?

I come from an era long gone now, in my OP all the great rock-n-roll happened in the 70's...heres one that ought to bring back memories and is great for what it was...


That ELP vid I just posted is a collection of of acoustic guitar, jazz piano fusion and drums all mixed into one terrific rock-n-roll song...they (bands) don't do that anymore. I saw so many great shows thru the 70s and 80's my mind was blown long ago.


Thank god for YouTube.

I don't mean to rip him so much, he's an amazing player......should have just said he's not my cup of tea. You're right that it fits the style. But then there's this from his same symphony album - its a really nice song, but his playing is so far over the top. The song just didn't need shredding.....and its impressive shredding for sure.

I would add that you could compare him to Buckethead, who can unleash the same fury but has figured out over the years that its best used a bit less often.
