Just a little history lesson to put things in perspective here. The majority of the posters here (eloco included) migrated here to avoid the shitstorm that was the ESPN boards. At the time, the Hoop was a fledgling site and the majority of the activity was on the NHL General board, so we pretty much ruled the roost. In an effort to keep out the riff-raff from ESPN, we mods ran a tight ship...no personal attacks, no excessive trolling, and if you do troll, at least bring something witty and entertaining instead of the old tired cliche crap.
As the site grew, changed owners and had to set up their own rules for the betterment of the entire community, some of those rules were at odds with how we had ran things here for years. As we adjusted our mod style to be more in line with the overall site, sometimes we would, and sometimes we still do, revert back to our old habits of running things more tightly.
Since Eloco has been a long-time well-known poster amongst the NHL Generals here, most of us understood the nature and joviality of Eloco's "fuck off" comment, and we mods let it go. In hindsight, if he had included an emoticon to convey his intent better, or if one of us would have stepped in to explain the comment more (which ties somewhat into the history of this board) much of this probably would have been avoided.
Is this a bad time to tell everyone to fuck off?
It was the catalyst, and these things general do devolve into a tit-for-tat thing, which is why we don't like that stuff here. We should have intervened sooner and explained the original retort better. FWIW, my comment about "do not dumb here" was directed at all involved, not just the newcomers.Understanding your point, BUT, there was a lot more than the (hello) fuck off post going on here. And with more than one person. And it became a tit for tat thing. And on more than one occasion it was the new comer being told no no no.

I just figure you're saying it when you poop on my car.
Yep, that was a part of the tit for tat that was dumb here.
