I've seen coincidental minors, but I've never seen coincidental knee to knee injuries. As short handed as the Pens are this year, that would make my day.

This was yet another missed opportunity by the NHL to set a stern precedent for this sort of incident. I think Trevor Gillies might be the only person who cares whether or not Trevor Gillies ever plays again, and while I know we shouldn't use star-status or lack thereof as a reason to punish more or less severely, Gillies did give the NHL a no-risk chance to throw the book at someone. They didn't.

Gillies has yet to contribute positively in his professional hockey career. No one would miss him, so why not just get rid of him? If the NHL did that, they could cite Trevor Gillies as a precedent for lengthier suspensions on hits to the head. The league wins, the players win, heck, even the Islanders win. The only person who doesn't win is Trevor Gillies, and Trevor Gillies has proved repeatedly that he doesn't deserve to win.

they kind of tried that last year with Simon getting 25 games for stepping on a guy, and Boulerice got 20 for crosschecking Kesler in the face.
pendulum of justice then swung the other way, and Pronger got 2 for stepping on a guy (Kesler, again), and the other weaker suspensions that followed for other guys.

that's the thing... no one would know if it was a message, as Colie isn't remotely consistent.
so sending this guy to Siberia wouldn't end up doing a damned thing in terms of precedence.

That's true. I suppose I should have also specified that after setting the precedent, they need to follow it. I thought it was a no-brainer, but you do bring up the very good point that a no-brainer is the one in charge of league discipline...

My stance is still the same, before we start throwing guys out of the league for stupidity, lets start throwing the guys out of the league that act maliciously. Matt Cooke is running around ending careers, and still trying to end careers. His 4 game suspension was a fucking joke and it was after his 3rd or 4th attempt at ending a career so its really weird to see people having a hissy fit over a 10 game suspension on a retaliation attempt. Gillies may have a short and stupid temper, he may only play 2 mins a game but his purpose is to stop guys like Cooke from doing the random attempts at ruining someones career. When Gillies ends the career of a guy of Savard's status, goes knee to knee with a guy of Ovechkin's status, and then smashes a guy in the corner like Tyutin, and only gets a 4 game suspension...then maybe you guys will have something to bitch about throwing him out of the league for.

I don't think the player you hit should really matter...personally.

We could have a separate thread for Cooke, but I don't think he's trying to end careers. He's a jerk and a piece of crap, but by the rules at the time, his hit on Savard was legal, and his suspension for the Tyutin hit was about in line with established precedents. I still want him to be a former-Penguin soon, and his actions are anything but commendable, but is he really relevant to this discussion?

Gillies stepped farther over the line than Cooke every has with what he did to Tangradi. He elbowed a defenseless player in the head, and then while that player gripped his head and stood dazed, he punched him. And then he punched him more when he was on the ice, not even with the faculties to cover himself. Then he taunted him from the tunnel while he was being tended to by trainers. This is an incident that is nearly unprecedented in the NHL.

Cooke and Gillies aren't even comparable players. Cooke is a hockey player who plays on the edge and crosses the line too much. Gillies plays past that line and doesn't contribute in any actual hockey way. He spends about twice as much time in the box as he does on the ice. What does that tell you about him?

lol you guys are the ones comparing players, i'm simply telling you why players like Gillies are in the league, because guys like Matt Cooke are ruining careers. You can be naive all you want but if you dont think that Matt Cooke is going out of his way to injure players than I reallly have nothing else to say to you. You're right Matt Cooke and Trevor Gillies arent comparable at all, Gillies is sticking up for his team, and Matt Cooke is just a piece of shit that runs around taking liberties on all the players around the league. If anybody deserves to be banned from the league its Matt Cooke.

That 4 game suspension was a joke, the none suspension on the Savard hit was a joke. The non suspension on the Ovechkin knee to knee was a joke. 10 games for Gillies is much more reasonable than what the league has over looked in Matt Cooke.

It matters in the sense of the intent in question. Do you think a player is going to risk a suspension trying to take out a player that is a non factor?

I would think that if a player is going after impact players it looks much worse than if a guy has questionable incidences against random players.

Just like when Crosby was hit by Steckel, there were so many people looking at that hit, so many reports, so many opinions, do you think that kind of reaction wouldve happened if it was Tyler Kennedy?

In the moral sense, yes it should not matter who the player is who gets injured, nobody wants to see any player get hurt.

Gillies wasn't sticking up for his team when he did what he did to Eric Tangradi. Tangradi barely even uses his body (much to the dismay of Penguins' fans). That was an essentially unsolicited attack.

Cooke's a jerk and I would love to see him out of the league, but he's at least a hockey player, which is more than can be said for Gillies.

Also, there's no way that he could have been suspended for the hit on Savard after Richards didn't get suspended for his hit on Booth. They were essentially the same play. The precedent was established with Richards, and they had to follow it with Cooke.

I agree that he should have been suspended for the knee-on-knee with Ovechkin, but he wasn't. And Gillies wasn't suspended for long enough. They are both testaments to the league's incompetence when it comes to dealing with such incidents, but they are also completely separate. The entire system, outside of and including Cooke and Gillies, is a complete sham. I've complained about the sham that was giving Cooke a free pass. I'm now complaining about the separate issue of not properly dealing with Gillies. I make my complaints as they are relevant.

Sounds good to me, only thing I dont agree with is Cooke being a hockey player, but the league needs a lot of work. Get rid of the free passes, implement a solid 3 strike and you're out rule that applies to everyone from the top to the bottom, but until changes are made I dont justify throwing a ban on Gillies.

I like a three strike system, but the first two strikes need to be harsher than they are now, too. 10 games automatically for hits to the head and dangerous boarding plays for a first offense would be a nice start. 15 games automatically for attacks that aren't even guised in the form of a hockey play. 2nd strike for each type of incident should be an additional 10 games. 3rd strike for each should be a season-long ban with consideration of a permanent ban.

Sound extreme? Yeah, it kind of is. But how many players will go out and do these things knowing that these are the consequences? Not many, I'm sure, and those that do don't belong in the league anyway.
