I never thought I'd root for the Pats either, but I would take some pleasure in watching them dominate in the rematch and prove that the Giants were and are a fluke.

Do Niners fans really want the team that beat them to be exposed as a fluke? I'd rather they win the SB.

I'm pretty sick of the Patriots success and that girly-haired model-banging QB they have (although as a person he actually seems ok...my criterion is willing to have a laugh at himself with a Simpsons cameo). The Pats are like the Yankees to me. Go Giants.

Anyone know about the 'mayoral bet' Ed Lee and Michael Bloomberg had before this game? Anyone else here wish they'd keep that silliness to the SB matchup only? What's next, mayors betting every Sunday?

Few? Try two. The entire loss lies on KW's shoulders. I am not saying the Niners definitely would have won w/o him, but there were only 2 turnovers in the game, both by him, both leading to scores.

And wasn't he in the game replacing Ginn? Injuries...

Yup, the game hinged on KW's fumbles, and that fumble non-call against the Giants.

The 49ers absolutely have to get some wide receivers in this draft, and some depth at the O-line. Looks like Smith and Harbaugh will be a couple for a while.

Oh, and figure out how to move the freaking ball. The Giants were unable to stop the Niners running, and yet in crunch time, ASmith was tossing the ball around the yard with abandon. :L

Still, a better than expected year from the Niners. Too bad it ended a game short of the goal.

To be fair the fumble non-call was legit, they made the right call. The runner was falling backwards and they blew the whistle. Now, that said, old school manly football says fuck that, the eye test = fumble. But if it were a Niners runner we'd all think the opposite.

Yeah we all noticed in the 2nd half they pretty much abandoned the run and we couldn't figure out why. It was working, they weren't down by much, etc.

In the end 2 evenly matched teams played about evenly and a couple of special teams mistakes made the difference. That's football.

And it ended 2 games short, I'd think once in the SB we'd want to win! :-)

You do realize that without that blown call, KW never gets a chance to fumble another punt....

Have to disagree see my previous post. The only thing debatable was did they blow the whistle a little early. But his forward motion was completely done and they called the play over. You can make a case they were a little hasty, that they didn't give the defense a chance to stand him up and rip the ball out, but isn't that the point of the rule? Otherwise teams would routinely swarm a guy, hold him still but upright, and yank the ball away.

Judgement call, not a blown call. If it was in the Niners favor don't even pretend you'd have a problem with it nor that you'd tear up any Giants fans complaining.

Darn shame but sports break your heart. Games of inches and milliseconds.

I have not made my mind up yet where I sit in a rooting sense, but I think I will be behind the Giants. I have nothing against the New York Football Giants after that game. They played a tough, good game. Not their fault only 52 Niners decided to actually show up.

Both teams currently have 3 rings, so the winner will join Green Bay with 4, so there is no edge there. I would like to keep Brady away from his fourth, though, and it would be amusing to think that Eli could have more rings than Payton.

I'm not a huge 49er fan at all (more of a "football" fan than any one particular team), so take this with a grain of salt. That said, I am happy with the season they had (became a bandwagon fan there). I also think the right team won. Kyle had two tough, tough plays, but Alex Smith was a complete non-factor except for two throws (granted they were big throws), Michael Crabtree was non-existant (although he and Smith go hand in hand) and the 49ers lack of 3rd down conversions cost the team a ton. The only players who get a complete pass from me was the Defense. They were on the field a ton due to the offensive ineptitude and they held their own (again) against a very good QB. Once again, they gave the 9ers more than enough chances to win.

Harbaugh is an excellent coach (at least to my untrained eye). I think this team will continue to improve (at least in the playoffs.....hard to continue to improve on the regular season record).

The 49ers basically got Montana'd. Not always gaudy stats, but when he needed to find a way to win, he did.....just like Eli. And NO, I'm not saying Eli is as good as Joe.

Not true. He hadn't hit the ground. EVERY OTHER PLAY in the game was allowed to play out to its natural conclusion. ONE PLAY was not.

Horseshit. A bad call determined the game. Every fans nightmare.

We got Hoculee'd in the ass.

Again, it was the ONLY play in the entire game that was not allowed to play out. Horseshit call, and I'd say so if it happened to Frank Gore.

Towards the end of the 4th quarter, I remember seeing a graphic that said both teams had 288 yards in total offense. That's pretty even. The Niners ran much better, but the Giants passed better.

I was very impressed with how the Niners shut down Cruz in the 2nd half after allowing him free rein in the first half.

Actually I have another theory now, after consulting a very wise sports sage. They panicked. There was fear in their eyes.

Hi, MSG, regarding who to root for between Pats and Giants, right now I'm leaning towards Pats. Both teams have 3 Super Bowls, and I'd rather root for the local kid to beat the Manning, especially since Manning won the first time around.

Things I'm telling myself right now to make me feel better:

1. The Niners probably would've lost anyway to the Pats (this is crappy thinking, I know).

2. At least the miscues happened in the NFC Championship game. It would've been worse if it happened in the Super Bowl (although Ginn might've been able to play if we made the Super Bowl).

3. At least the defense showed that they were champions.

4. With Harbaugh as coach, the Niners should be a consistently good team.

5. Alex Smith did this well without a WR. Imagine how well he'll do if we added a good WR.

Please feel free to add.

Kyle Williams also moved us up a spot or two in the draft selection (more crappy thinking, I know).

Interesting non-100%-support from Harbaugh for Smith in the presser today. I know it is Harbaugh, and he NEVER answers a question, but to "answer" the question the way he did was a bit surprising to me.

I think Harbaugh is just being consistent with the way he's operated this team since taking over. Hopefully, this motivates Smith to be even better.

Alex is definitely going to be more expensive this off-season, there are other FAs on the team deserving of a pay day, Harbaugh will have a full training camp and he has proven that he can coach a quarterback that was previously unsuccessful to be effective in his offense. I realize these are all things that you know, but they're also good reasons to be non-committal.

Those are all valid. Add the following:

6. Young team, so no reason they can't stay competitive

7. If you'd have been told at seasons beginning this was how the season would play out you'd ask the teller what they were smoking.

There's many others. It sucks to lose any time, and sucks to lose in the playoffs pretty hard. But that's sports, it's supposed to suck to lose. And that's what makes the championships meaningful.

Think of it this way, I'm not a Niners fan but I can imagine it was pretty hard to be one for a long time. Now there's probably not another team you'd trade to be a fan of.

Thanks, MSG. For me, it actually hasn't been hard being a Niner fan even when they sucked because I always have the memories of the Montana, Rice, Young years to fall back on. I had the perfect football fan childhood. However, I would like to see them win another one in my lifetime and it sucks that they lost an opportunity for one with uncharacteristically bad special teams play last night.

Who's your team?
