Garth Snow doesn't agree with Gillies suspension

Tough to get any traction on cutting down hits from behind/hits to the head when GM's are this clueless...

Islanders’ GM Garth Snow does not agree with the 10-game suspension that NHL handed down to Trevor Gillies on Friday. As a matter of fact, he doesn’t even necessarily think the hit Gillies put on the Wild’s Cal Clutterbuck during Wednesday’s 4-1 win was a penalty.

“From the play, the way I saw it develop, there was a hit form behind on [Islanders’ rookie Justin] DiBenedetto by the Minnesota player,” Snow said on Saturday before the Islanders’ game against the Blues at the Coliseum. “Then Trevor comes over and tries to finish his check. The first point of contact was shoulder-to-shoulder, it was not a hit from behind by any means.”

Everyone except Snow and Gillies and a few Isles fans (not even all...) can see this for what it is.

Yeah, I understand that, but you can still stick up for your guy while admitting that he made a mistake...

To be perfectly honest, I didn't think the hit was that bad. You can clearly see Clutterbuck's numbers the whole time and he did seem to get him from the side some and from the back some. It wasn't high speed and he didn't leave his feet.

I'm a little surprised he got 10 games for it.

Is Gillies a previous offender?

Yea, it was his first game (3rd shift) back from the 9 games he got in the brawl against the Pens

He should sign Gillies to a 17yr contract, and thus doom him to a career of odd, unusual season ending injuries and therefore protect the other players int he league. Just a thought......

I know he is just trying to stick up for his player but this just makes him look bad IMO. Everyone knows that was a cheapshot. He could have received a worse suspension considering the circumstances, they should accept it and move on.

DaBoltsnIsles pointed out that the Islanders didn't even send representation to Gillies's meeting. I don't think Snow actually believes what he said here, but just said it for the team's/fans' benefit.


That said, it was still kind of stupid.

Kind of have trouble keeping track of all of the Islanders, since there have been about 50 of them this year and I just don't pay that much attention to them. Good with faces, bad with names.
