Well.......I have been in the detroit area forever but I did just visit home and damn was it ever refreshing. Nothing and I mean nothing beats family. The youngest getting to know his cousins.......nothing compares.

I'd forgotten that. Glad you enjoyed the visit. I'd like to get back there at least once and say hi to some folks.

I think of going to visit you in your newer world. Want to badly. A place to visit before I die.

How's your daughter doing?

So there's NO better fantasy tv shows. Noted.

And even the best at something has weaknesses.

GoT is the best fantasy show currently on TV. And its biggest weakness is D&D's original writing.

D&D are excellent producers, and I've never said otherwise. Things like their set design, costuming, and casting are some of the best on TV. What I'm criticizing is their writing. They're great producers, but hack writers.

Yeah, Banff and the area is great. But it's smoky this summer. Forest fires in Northern BC.

She just graduated. Doing okay. Typical 17 year old issues. :)

Disagree. The show was going to piss people off in some way, because SOMEONE was going to get cut. Dorne was cut to the bone.

Somebody had to go.

Try this as an exercise. Find someone who hasn't seen the show or read the books. Explain the show to them.

When you backtrack for the 11th time, having left some key person out, you'll get why adapting those books is SO tough.

They've done a fan-fucking-tastic job.

That shit is HARD.

The first is downright laughable.

The second and third have been championed by guess who? GRRM.

And you stopped at three for a reason. Hell, I'll throw down Morgan and or Abercrombie as maybes. But it dries up VERRRRY fast. I fucking LOVE fantasy, I've been reading it voraciously all my life. Most of it is complete dreck. Swill. Garbage.

What's funny though, is you can't name anyone more influential than Martin in the last 20 years of fantasy.

He's a giant of the genre, and those guys you mentioned are at least 2/3 hugely influenced by HIM.

Heh.

I've always loved David Gemmell 'anti-hero' fantasy...

Gemmell was formulaic, but did it so well, I couldn't help but love his characters.

Agreed. Simple writing style. Flawed heroes.
Fantasy fluff, if that's your kind of thing.

And like my nom de plume, I enjoyed the books by David Eddings.
Brienne/Tormund reminds me of Mirtai/Kring.

Good stuff...

and Dorne was cut wrong if you ask me, just like the Tyrell storyline was done wrong. I think there are ways to sway from the books that is done right and the show did a good job with most of it, but there were still a couple things they did that drove me a little crazy

I still love the show, I just think they could have done some things a little better.

Cersei has never been too bright

Now she's ugly, too.

I recently watched HBO's Seasons 1-6 recap and was thinking how hot Cersei was with the long, beautiful hair. Then I saw Sunday's episode and she's got that short, crunchy hair and looks all ugly.

Stupid and ugly is a combination that I just can't abide.

He's got a new fantasy series out. Flying marine pirates with talking cats. Fun stuff, doesn't take itself too seriously.

Even if the fat hobbit lives to finish it will he be in his right mind to do it justice at 95 years old?

If he's anything like the 95 year olds that I've known, Chapters 5,6,8 and 11 will likely be nearly exact replicas of Chapter 3.
