God no, I didn't like it for Brown and for Gabby its even worse. Gabby can still put the puck in the net and the Kings need that while Gabby isn't great it would be easier to find a Dman instead of Phanuef for 2mil (the difference in cap hit between Gabby/Phanuef) then it would be to replace Gabby for -2mil in cap.....Its not even a haha funny thing to discuss
I don't like it either. Only if there is a secondary package move to made involving Phanuef, but that seems highly unlikely.
Even if there is a secondary move involving another d-man (Muzz, Marty, Forbort, etc), then it better be a darn great move. Because adding Phanuef (+ cap hit) isn't an upgrade over any our current d-men.
Yeah, agree with everyone. Not a fan of this at all. Add $2mil/year and somehow get slower and have less offense.
Phaneuf at $7mil/year
Brown ($5.875mil/year) and Gaborik ($4.875mil/year)
Adding $2.125mil/year in cap for Gaborik swap and $1.125mil/year for Brown swap.
Weird that this discussion has popped up again, which leads me to believe maybe Blake/Robitaille aren't entirely confident with the defense as is (Or would like more depth in the event someone like Martinez goes down again. I'd hate to think maybe Martinez's surgery didn't go as well as we'd hoped).
As of now, the Kings have just under $6mil in cap space, which is actually kind of nice if I'm reading that correctly. Hate for them to tap into that for the sake of tapping into that. Need to attempt to use that for some offense (Captain Obvious).
Phanuef isn't an answer to any of the Kings problems which concerns me that he is being brought up. Even if Martinez is out I would rather get someone cheaper and faster then Phanuef. I am OK with LaDue, Gravel Forbort and even see what this Folin guy they picked up can do. If Gabby or Brown where moved it better be for a speedy youngster even if we need to pony up something else (obviously) otherwise they are doing that crappy thing where they try to fill a potential need by making the obvious need much worse. Honestly Iggy is still a huge gap filler even tho he doesn't address the speed problem he does everything else we had hoped Brown would do. Unless he is asking for 5m I don't understand why he isn't brought in again. At this point the Kings would be better off with what they have and see whats available as teams drop off the race and easy/cheap deals can be made.
I agree. Just leave the team as is if your only real idea is to bring in Phaneuf. I'm not against bringing back Iginla either, as he seemed to like LA and he was a motivated dude. His net-front presence on the PP alone made him valuable.
