I figured it out; Harbaugh never took down his ad' on craigslist from last year:

Not looking for the worst QB in the NFL (Geno Smith), but if you have someone who is bottom 3 we would be extremely interested. We're offering a 6th-round pick in the NFL draft. Please send inquiries to [email protected]

Everytime the Niners sign a Mizzou player, a piece of me dies.

By all means, though, please start Gabbert

Read somewhere that they will try to get it down to a one year $1mil deal to be the backup

What would Gabbert's incentive be? Just wondering. They traded a sixth round for him and I suppose they could just forget it and cut him, but why? It seems like he should keep the deal he has (2.01 for one year) over 1M for one year. Is it that he thinks by doing so he could get another year from it? I mean, 1 million is pretty low. A backup can make up to 4 Million a year (Moore, but he was competing for starter) (3.625 for Hasselbeck.)

Unless they are trying to add years to the deal

Just a deal for a back-up QB....nothing more. Who would be better, cheaper or available in this FA?

Yeah, I could see them doing a one year extension, 2 years, 4.25 M with 1M this year, not quaranteed. Or make it three years, 7M and make this year 1M, next 2.5, and next 3.5. We'd replace him next year or the next. There has to be an incentive, unless he thinks he can't get one million from someone else this or next year or that he thinks he will get enough reps to garner a 3+ deal somewhere. He has to make up for the 1M does he not?

Why not just draft a QB and pay the back up like 500k or whatever. You save money and the player would probably have a higher ceiling.

I wouldve been perfectly happy keeping BJ Daniels as the back up QB for real cheap.

I liked Gabbert coming out of college, but quickly changed my mind about him after the preseason. The guy gets rattled way too easily, but behind a good OL he could impress.

If he will at least be competent enough to go through a second read, I'm all for it.

I don't think the Niners would agree to trade for him if he didn't agree to reduce his base salary. The appeal for Gabbert is to be coached by Harbaugh in a winning organization which might lead to him getting another contract. Not bad for a guy who was probably going to be out of the league soon.

Are you getting a QB with a higher ceiling with the 6th round pick the Niners gave up? What round would you draft this QB that has a higher ceiling?

If Gabbert can develop a pocket presence, he may be decent someday. I fear that time never will come though.

I know this is not worth the potential lost money, but at least we won't have to read how that said-draft pick is a sign of the Niners not liking Kaepernick. I think Gabbert is low enough that no monkey with a keyboard is going to claim that, not even Cohn - though I suppose he could say trading for a 2M backup when you could have had a 500K guy shows that. There are no limits to Cohn in that direction.
