It makes sense because he's going to be an UFA next year and he'll either want the same salary or possibly a raise. Carter and Giroux will be RFA next year so they'll definitely be looking for raises. If they decide not to resign carter they'll get picks back for him. They wouldnt get anything for Gagne. Gagne has a lot of injuries as of late but he had a decent season so his stock has risen. I think they're trying to unload him while they can.

Ok so let me first say I hate Eklund, he's n ass. Now that we're past that.

If Gags has indeed been asked to waive his NTC if is definately a sad day in philadelphia. There have been very few players I have seen in the NHL as loved as Gags is in philly. I only hpe this may be some kind of maneuver to sign him to a cheap multi-year extension before he steps on the ice again(however I know that is not the case).

OK so trading Gags to free up cap space would be a difficult pill to Chances are though that we would not be able to afford to ring Gags back after this year unless he was wiling to take a major pay cut probably to about 3 million a year(at the most). Since we need to resign at least Giroux and most likely Leino(as long as he does 't tank this season) this may be the best move Homer has now, to get something of value now while he can rather then let Gags walk for nothing later(a la Jay-Bo in Florida).

I'm really not sure what they are looking at as a return now, I think it's a toss up between a young goalie or a young winger accompanied by a pick/prospect. I could also see the FLyers attempting to package Boosh with Gags if they go the trade route for a goalie(after all Boosh is a proven back-up goalie who is competitive enough to push any teams starter). If they go the young winger route they would probably have about 6 millon in cap space to pursue Nabby or Turco to a reasonable contract(3 years at 3 mill a year max in my opinion).

I think Homer's loyalty to Carter is a bit strange but him and the rest fo the FLyers developement team include Lavi must see something in him, and even though like many other fans I would rather trade carter now I'm going to trust in Lavi since he came in and basically saved our season. Without Lavi we would not have mad the playoffs and may be blown up right now(see the Chicago Blackhawks :D). The other path of logic to keeping Carter is possibly to lock him down to say a 6-7 year 40 mill contract that's a little under 6 mill a year(about 750k more then Gags) which is only about a 1 mil raise for a guy who's capable of scoring 40+ goals a year while still being young enough to improve and having no major injury history. Oh and let's say Carter does want insane money after next year and we're not willing to pay all we have to do is qualify him(with the type of contract I stated above) and sit back and wait for another team to meet his demands then collect our compensation which I listed below.

OFFER
COMPENSATION
$994,433 or below None
Over $994,433 to $1,506,716 Third-round choice
Over $1,506,716 to $3,013,434 Second-round choice
Over $3,013,434 to $4,520,150 First-round and third-round choice
Over $4,520,150 to $6,026,867 First-round, second-round and third-round choice
Over $6,026,867 to $7,533,584 Two first-round choices, one second- and one third-round choice
Over $7,533,584 Four first-round choice

I know trading Gags is not the most popular move but it may in the end be the best option we have to keep our young players locked up for a ong time to come and maybe just maybe have a chance to build a dynasty of sorts. Remember running a team is a buisness(sorry Scott I stole your line) and Homer has earned a little bit of trust from us(Shelley WTF were you thinking? cause you're not helping my trust you argument ) so let's ll try to be patient and wait and see where he goes with this one. Since it is evidentally apparent this team is better then the one we just missed out on the cup with last year.

*Oh and Tox fuck the PGA and their douchebag reporters.

why would he want a raise? he makes 5.25 mil and got that contract because he was scoring 40 goals a year. right now i see him as more of a 4.5 mil a year player.

I highly doubt he would get a raise, but even at 4.5 a year I can't see us being able to afford Giroux and Leino, and then JVR the next season.

then get rid of hartnell. he is worse offensively and defensively than gagne and take penalties.

I personally feel that Hartnell will change a lot of minds this year, he has tons to prove and he does show up every night unlike some centers we have(cough cough Carter). Plus unloading Hartnell now would get like no positive return after his past regular season.

It also may come down to Hartnell playing 82 games and Gagne playing 40-50. I'm not trying to compare the 2 cause Gags is superior but there are a lot of intangables to consider here.

yea i understand. i try to look at it from both sides. i am a fan though so i dislike any move that gets rid of gagne. he has never won a cup here and he got so close last year.

Oh i totally agree I want him to retire a Flyer but in the new "cap era" it's almost unrealistic to believe a player will stay with one team fortheir entire career, no matter how much we in philly wan him to.

That is entirely possible but we're so tight up against the cap we're at a sort of disadvantage in trade talks now cause teams realize the position we're in. For all we know another option will be found though and Gags will retire a Flyer and all those in Flyerdom will rejoice :D.
