a compiler who does not reach any milestone is not a HOF in my book... it is all about the milestone... I just cant imagine someone not very good ever hitting the milestone even as a compiler...

Omar Vizquel nearly made 3000 hits. :D

Although I suspect he is probably the worst hitter with that many career hits. It also took him 24 years to compile that many.

But he is not in the club so it is irrelevant... There is a huge difference...

I am not solely on the Milestone bandwagon though, there are other ways to make it... And i dont only use a milestone for HRs,and Hits... I do for SBs as well i consider it 800 SBs...

So Vince Coleman was just 48 steals away from being a HOFer in your book?

Lou Brock is easily one of the most overrated players of all-time.

Which isn't the point...we're saying it could happen, just like it could happen with a pitcher getting to 300, and whether they'd be HOF worthy if that did happen.

Yes, pitchers that get 300 wins...should automatically get in the HOF....

15 yrs...20 wins a season average

20 yrs....15 wins a season average

both worthy by any stretch....Buerle might prove or disprove that concept once he is done if he stays on the 200 inning a season pace.

A guy who is an average hitter wouldn't get the opportunity...although Omar was about as close as it gets...but thats very rare.

Damon...close but no cicar...if he was over 3000 hits...a ring or two and his influence on so many different teams...yes he gets in.

If Buerhle keeps winning at the same rate he has so far in his career (which seems generous to begin with) he'll still be 2 wins short of 300 when he hits his 43rd birthday. There was a time when it seemed possible but at this point I don't think there's much chance he'll get there.

He's in the same boat as Beltran for me..underrated careers and I think they're HOF worthy, but I feel that they'll have a tough time getting in (at least in the first couple years).

100% disagree with you there... And are you saying he doesnt belong, or just that he is one of the worst players in the HOF that belong in the HOF...

I could see him being overrated, HOF or not.

Brock wasn't great at getting on base (.343 OBP, only 1x in the top 10), didn't hit for power, and for all the accolades he gets for his baserunning, he was thrown out 25% of the time. He needed to steal those bases to compensate for his lack of extra base hits and all the outs he made.

Was he better than a guy like Tim Raines? I'm sure the average fan thinks so.

Not only that, but those stats came from LF. And it's not like he was a good defender there either.

I don't think he should be in.

If we agree that there are 3 facets to the game: hitting, Baserunning and defense... How can someone who is considered one of the greatest all time in one of the facets not be in the HOF... forget the all around player... The best should always make it no matter how good they are at the other things... He just has too many SBs not to make the HOF(even if his percentage is not the greatest)...

Because baserunning isn't quite as important as the other two.

It wasn't just not the greatest, it wasn't that all that great.

Let me put it this way.....if he had 200 less steals, but conversely 200 of his singles were turned into doubles (where he wouldn't need the stolen base to be in scoring position), his career would have more value, although he'd have 738 steals instead of 938

But it is not like we are talking about good SB guys, we are talking about the best... The best should always make the HOF...
