Russian hockey’s top grudge match – the Avangard Omsk vs. Vityaz Chekhov encounter – once again lived up to its heavyweight hype.
Trouble has followed these teams around since the tragic death of an Avangard player at a game in Chekhov two seasons ago.
Last January a clash between the two was abandoned within five minutes after a mass brawl resulted in neither side having sufficient players to continue the game.
And earlier this season the teams shared a total of 174 penalty minutes as Avangard won 4-2 in Podmoskovye.
Friday fight
The sides took to the ice once again on Friday afternoon in Siberia, and within six seconds the gloves were coming off.
A mass brawl started almost with the first face-off, and resulted in a string of penalties called against two home players and five visiting Vityaz men.
Notoriously pugnacious Canadian Darcy Verot led the way, earning a five minute fighting penalty and a 10 minute misconduct rap.
And team-mate Joshua Gratton was given 25 minutes to cool his heels after a gross misconduct call.
The rest of Vityaz’s starting quintet, Ivan Larin, Denis Sergeyev and Sergei Belokon each received double minor penalties for roughing. Marek Svatos and Alexei Bondarev of Avangard were each handed minors for the same offence.
During the extended powerplay Avangard opened up a two-goal lead, but early in the second period the hosts found themselves shorthanded and allowed Chris Simon to pull one back for the visitors before Sergeyev atoned for his earlier misdemeanours by equalising. But the hosts prevailed with a late goal from Alexander Perezhogin to win 3-2.
