Are you talking about bonuses? Because they all count against the cap. A team can go over the cap by a little bit due to bonuses (called a bonus cushion. i think it's 7.5%), but that excess-figure is deducted from the team's cap the following season.

Yeah, and that next season thing is the reason the Hawks are so screwed salary wise, if I'm not mistaken. When Toews won the Conn Smythe he got a 1.something million bonus that lands next year, which throws an already rough situation straight in the gutter.

Both Kane and Toews hit all of their bonuses, which totaled about $4-5 million. It pushed them over the cap by nearly $4 million, which is just about the limit of the bonus cushion.
