They don’t sign for 5 years.
They sign for 4 years and the team has an option to extend one year or not. That is not a 5 year deal. That’s a 4 year deal with a team option to extend or not extend.

Signing a Deal and contract means the same thing. And you don’t have to write contracts to understand that rookie 1st round picks sign a 4 year deal with a team option to extend one year is not a rookie signing a 5 year deal. It’s a rookie signing a 4 year deal with the team having the option to extend it or not.

You are exactly right.

The player signed a 5 year contract with the 5th year being at sole discretion of the team. The player MUST play out the 5th year IF the team exercises the option.

If it was a 4 year contract (as PE1 is suggesting) then the player wouldn’t have any obligations in year 5. In other words, he’d be free from the contract. He isn’t. So it’s not a “4 year year contract”.

A contract is a very complicated document. When an NFL contract is signed, the reporter must "report" in very simple terms what the contract money is and we want to know the $$$.
When the rookie 5 year contract is signed, we don't know the dollar value of the 5th year until the contract is 3 years in.
The reporter then accepts the option of reporting the 1st four years and dollar value, rather than waiting 3 years to write his report (and losing his job) or guessing what the 5th year will be worth and being called by his competitors (and losing his job)

I deal with contractual terms, not "reporting"
Your argument, " but but but somebody said!" would be thrown out of court. The judge would say, "what did the contract say?"
