There’s things going on that we just don’t fully know
A contract is a very complicated document. When an NFL contract is signed, the reporter must "report" in very simple terms what the contract money is and we want to know the $$$.
When the rookie 5 year contract is signed, we don't know the dollar value of the 5th year until the contract is 3 years in.
The reporter then accepts the option of reporting the 1st four years and dollar value, rather than waiting 3 years to write his report (and losing his job) or guessing what the 5th year will be worth and being called by his competitors (and losing his job)
I deal with contractual terms, not "reporting"
Your argument, " but but but somebody said!" would be thrown out of court. The judge would say, "what did the contract say?"

they are reporting what they know.@SteelersPride @Southieinnc NFL.com is wrong, SI.com is wrong, Denver Post is wrong too right?

Saquon Barkley signs a 4 year deal

Quentin Nelson signs 4 year deal
Colts sign first-round pick guard Quenton Nelson
but that isnt known until 3 years later. As those averages changes every year.YEP... and the contract would say they signed a 4 year deal with the team having an option year or not to pick up the option. The reporter wouldnt lose his job because the simply take the average of the top players at their positions 1-10 for top 10 picks and 3-32 for picks 11 and below,
Ding ding ding.they are reporting what they know.
No one knows what the 5th year would be.

Well there is three parts to a consideration. He is wrong. Go look at my links above unless you believe Southie over ESPN, NFL.com and the Denver Post.
Ding ding ding.
Well there is three parts to a consideration.
What a reporter thinks isnt one of them.
its the avg. salary after the 3rd year. not when they signed. You just take the average salary of players at that position. They signed a 4 year deal and we will wait and see if it continues to be a 4 year deal or if the team chooses to extend it. Thats not a 5 year deal.

Look. Let me help you out.I agree with him but that doesnt mean they signed a 5 year deal. They signed a 4 year deal with the team having the right to keeping it a 4 year deal or the team extending it one more year.
Ding ding ding
ok. then you now know why you cant report #'s for the 5th year when a rookie signs his contract.I know
lol but if they were drafted!ok. then you now know why you cant report #'s for the 5th year when a rookie signs his contract.
These things are unknown until after year three.
