Does anyone think that Hextall coming back to the front office means Homer is on his way out?

Here's my take on this. I think Homer knows that he is on a short leash. I think Homer approached Hexy bc they both are very similar in many ways. They are very close friends as well. I think Homer wants Hexy to take over the GM position if things don't work out. I would find this awkward, but from reading other columns and such, it seems like it's a comfortable situation?

agree w/ mally, again. i think hexy was brought in as the 'next in line'.. i think the flyers have to start the season strong or homer and lavy will be in trouble

i think we are reading into it too much. holmgren is 57 years old, he may not want the job for more than 2-3 years so why not bring in someone to groom to leave the organization in a good position?

We have to make more moves to get under the cap it will be Hextal's first test with us

for the most part, i agree. obviously wasn't thrilled with all the pronger stuff (new guys, there's probably tons of threads on this in the past haha), and didn't like the goalie signings til this summer, but he finally got the goalie market right this summer and i like 95% of the trades hes made.. even the kubina and versteeg trades i thought were good trades at the time, they just didn't work out

I loved the Versteeg trade wish it wouldve worked out but Richards and Carter ran the locker room at that time and im sure never made him feel at home because we just played him in the cup the year before and his game never got going in Philly.

Agree,except for the Pronger deal(which I have mentioned)

As for the Bryz deal-that was Snider who was behind the "ending the goalie caroussel".Homer was a puppet on that one.As for the draft signings-again Homer has to take to heart,what his scouts tell him on the players.

I've never had an issue with this deal. In Pronger's one, and only, full season on the Flyers -- we were within a hair of our first cup in 30+ years.

Holmgren is often the target of my wrath when it comes to the Flyers. Back on the ESPN message boards I argued that he did the worst job of any NHL GM last season and deserves to be on the hot season. Although I still believe he should be on the hot seat, I think he's made some good moves since the trade deadline. Bringing in Mason, buying out Briere & Bryzgalov, drafting Morin & Hagg, were all moves I agreed with 100% (although I would've drafted Hagg in round 1 & Morin in round 2, but that's nitpicking).

At the same time, he's old, and it doesn't hurt to look for a replacement ASAP. Hextall is my all time favorite Flyer, and I think having Hextall back with the organization makes things exciting.

just to get all the new guys up to speed, i hated chris pronger, mostly because of what the trade and his extension have cost the flyers. the trade for him was lupul (legit top 6 winger), sbisa (1st round pick), and two 1st round picks. in the cap era, you HAVE to have guys on ELC's or second contracts (ie giroux) if you want to win the cup. the loss of those 3 first round picks decimated the flyers already weak farm system, and it continues to haunt them.

the extension was beyond stupid. salary cap wise, his injury was a blessing. i feel bad for the guy, and really hope he does fully recover and lives a normal life from here on out, but if he had stayed relatively healthy and retired a couple years later, the flyers would be fully on the hook for 5 mil/season until he turned 42. and every offseason, it still hurts. they are forced to move salary before the season starts because of it. a d-corp of timonen, schenn, coburn, streit, meszaros, and grossmann would be a top 5 d-unit int he entire league. but they can't have that because of the pronger extension.

on the ice, offensively he was a beast, and leadership wise there was nobody better. but i didn't think he was anything special defensively while he was on the flyers. i thought he was slow and far from the dominating physical presence that i expected. for the trade and contract to be worth it, his defensive game needed to be better, and he needed to bleed more opponents.

that's awaz's stance on pronger. i promise you will not win an argument with me on any of the above, just about everyone on here has tried

I don't hold Pronger against Holmgren too much. I always questioned the extension, never made sense to me, but they did get good results in 2010. I didn't think he would get injured, I just thought he would get too old. Ironically, his injury gives the Flyers an opportunity to brush this under the rug, so you can't complain too much about that. Also with the buyouts, Holmgren got saved on the Briere & Bryzgalov contracts. Personally, I think he got bailed out, hasn't really shown great managerial skills. Not saying he's a horrible GM who needs to get fired but I guess I'm just not impressed.

thats fair.. he still gets a ton of credit from me for his first 6 months or so on the job. the 2006/07 flyers team was just awful. they were 14 points clear of the 14th place team in the east that year, and 36 (!) points out of the playoffs. in about a calendar year he remade the team in to one that was a blood clot (timonen) and broken face (coburn) away from competing with the pens for a stanley cup birth.
