Stupid question here boys. How exactly does this amnesty clause work? Does this mean we have to pay the entire 8-9 year salary in one lump sum? Same Briere and possibly Mezsaros? That's a lot of cash people. Am I on the right track in regard how the amnesty clause works?

Umm...I'm fairly certain that it is not a one time lump sum. I'll have to double check...unless awaz knows for sure.

Amnesty buyouts work the same way as this except they don't count against the cap.

NHL Salary Cap FAQ

Teams are entitled to buy out player contracts for a portion of the remaining value of the contract — paid over a period of twice the remaining length of the contract. Following are the buyout amounts:

Younger than age 26 at the time of buyout, 1/3 the remaining value

Age 26 or older at the time of the buyout, 2/3 the remaining value
