January 2, 2016 saw the end of the 2015 campaign for the Oregon Ducks and TCU Horned Frogs, the teams meeting up in San Antonio to see who would get bragging rights to a tourist attraction located next to a church downtown.
The Ducks were part of a competitive Pac-12 North chase that saw Stanford win the Division with UO finishing 2nd. Despite that, Oregon was still riding high with Vernon Adams Jr. at quarterback and arriving in San Antonio with a 9-3 record and a 6 game winning streak. One of those wins was a tight one over Stanford. However, a dangerous precedent for the season had been set early on for Oregon as they went 2-1 in their non-conference slate. Both wins, over Eastern Washington and Georgia State saw them score 61 points in each. Their loss, to Michigan State saw them score considerably less than that, 28. In other words, in order to beat a non-conference opponent the Ducks would likely need to score 61 points.
TCU meanwhile finished 3rd in the Big 12 Championship hunt behind Champion Oklahoma and runner-up Oklahoma State, who were also the only teams to beat the 10-2 H-Frogs. After their loss to the Sooners, Texas Christian marched onward to their annual rivalry matchup against Baylor and took the win in Ft. Worth. Both Oregon and TCU would have to wait over a month for their season finale.
The Alamo Bowl didn't start off as anything special. The Frogs were flatter than a sheet of paper and the Ducks took advantage, leading to a 31-0 UO lead at halftime. Just before the 2nd Quarter ended though, a key injury to the whole game occurred as Adams went down of which neither he or the Ducks would recover. This led to a 2nd Half which saw TCU storm back to force overtime. It took 3 OT sessions, but TCU would complete the comeback and win 47-41. Also hurting Oregon was the ditching by offensive coordinator Scott Frost before the game as he would find a new gig waiting for him in Orlando that was too good to pass up.
TCU would end their season at 11-2 while Oregon's would end at 9-4. The Alamo Bowl comeback remains tied for highest ever among bowl games with the another Lone Star team effort in terms of Bowl game comeback wins, the 2006 Copper Bowl which saw Texas Tech beat Minnesota.
For Texas Christian University, the 2016 Alamo Bowl [January Edition] remains a major highlight of the Gary Patterson Era. For the University of Oregon, it's become a game to forget.
