You wouldn't trade the first pick for say the third and seventh overall? I'd consider it this year.

With the Jackets possibly having three non-playoff range picks and no need to pick Jones, I absolutely would do this. If they had first overall, they could go with MacKinnon or Drouin. Or if someone wants to guarantee Jones, let 'em have him and get an extra pick? Hells yeah, I would.

If the team who has the 1st overall pick trades it this year their GM should be fired on the spot.

For most. Jackets are in a unique position.

If I had the 1st pick the lowest I would consider going is 2. If I can't get Jones I'd want McKinnon. I like Drouin a lot, but the Center has more value. Both forwards could be special & who knows Nichushkin could be the best player in the draft, but the team who takes him will have to wait 2 years before they'll have a chance to sign him.

The Blue Jackets are liking the way the Rangers are playing right now.

I am liking the Rangers struggles on a number of levels. Their pick, they might decide Nash isn't worth it and buy him out, Torts is being humbled, and... I fucking Hate the Rangers.

Radar >>> Ryan

my goodness RoR is going to be an overpaid motherfu-shutyourmouth when it's all said and done.

1. $2.9 mill to play less than 40 games this year
2. $6.5 mill for next year
3. $6.5 mill is qualifying offer for the year after
4. who knows
5. UFA

for someone who has scored 39 goals in three years combined (career high last year 18G, 37A).
even in junior he never got 20 goals.

AND, if this clown is making $6.5m minimum in two years, what do you think Landeskog will ask for? what do you think Duchene will ask for? both contracts also due in two years.
Calgary has effectively fucked the Avs with this structure. nice. :)

as Mattola mentioned, this contract is best buried on another team by the time that happens.
and teams will be just lining up to take it, I'm sure.

yikes. Flames may have fucked the Avs on the contract basis,
but they sure bent over in the 3rd period tonight.

leading 4-2 after two. bam, bam, bam. lost 5-4
at least it was in regulation.

bad OOTS in the NW div.
Min, Edm, Col all with 2 points.

All this does is drive up the price for duchene even more. I think the avs did Calgary a favor by matching, better off building through the draft, especially with this years deep draft

Sorry, but the Kings will be making the playoffs. They're on a roll right now. It's not going to end anytime soon either. The Rangers aren't done yet either. Trust me I hope they miss the playoffs, but we'll have to wait & see.

I'd prefer one of the forwards for my team as well. However, Jones will be tough to pass up on for whoever has the 1st pick.

Ryan O'Reilly a 2nd round pick in the 2009 draft will be making more money next year & during his next contract than John Tavares the 1st overall pick in the 2009 draft. I doubt anybody believes O'Reilly is anywhere near the player Tavares is. I have a feeling the Avs are going to regret matching the offer. I just don't think O'Reilly is worth it. Duchene & Landeskog are going to expect huge raises when it's their turn.

Ferraro thinks ROR's career arc will be similar to Brandon Sutter ... not a #1 centre ... "this contract sets him up for failure"

WOW ... could u imagine??? (i said that in Bryzgalov voice)

Jay Feaster might consider sending Greg Sherman a thank-you note. Or perhaps a fine bottle of wine.

The general manager of the Colorado Avalanche appears to have inadvertently done the Calgary Flames a big favour by choosing to match the offer sheet signed by 22-year-old centre Ryan O’Reilly on Thursday.

In a bizarre twist to an already unusual story, Sportsnet.ca has discovered that the Flames were not only in danger of losing 2013 first- and third-round draft picks as compensation if the Avs hadn’t matched the O’Reilly contract, but they also would likely have had to surrender the player before ever getting him in uniform.

That’s because O’Reilly would have needed to clear waivers before joining the team’s roster.

The unsigned forward spent part of the NHL lockout playing with his brother, Cal, for Magnitogorsk in Russia. According to Metallurg coach Paul Maurice and KHL spokesman Shawn McBride, he appeared in games on Jan. 21 and Jan. 23 – both after the shortened NHL schedule was back underway – which meant that waivers were required before O’Reilly could return to the NHL as a free agent midway through the season.

Not a bad comparison.

I think that ROR will be slightly better than Sutter in all facets of the game but similar for sure. One thing is for sure, on a team with Duchene he won't be constantly seeing the shutdown pair.
