That's steep for sure. Might be the reason the Avs don't match.

Might also be a reason why the Flames walk away from ROR, and a handful of draft picks, in two years.

right now Flames have #8 pick. Could probably get a better player than O'Reilly with that, and lets face it, Colorado isn't in win-now mode.

Yup. See what they can move for may another first rounder at the deadline this year. Maybe move Stastny for a prospect and first rounder. Then the core would be:

Landeskog (nice)
E. Johnson (meh)

top 15 pick (Calgary)
top 15 pick (Colorado)
late 1st rounder (deadline/Stastny deal)
Varlamov

From a Flames standpoint it's not that bad in that O'Reilly is so young. Losing what could be a top 10 pick in a deeeeep draft year could sting though. As could his ~$7M salary come 2015.

I'll be surprised if the Avs match. Like you said they could have two top 5 to 10 picks in a deep draft.
