I don't understand what goaltender interference is anymore

I don't think that decision was as much goaltender interference as it was "If I reverse this, these people will eat my kidneys"

Backstrom was interfering with Anderson. But he was pushed in there by the D man. But he didn't really try to get out of the crease, Backstrom just threw his arms in the air and stood there. But Anderson was paying more attention to what Backstrom was doing instead of looking for the puck.

In other words I really don't know which way to see that call.

Backstrom made contact with Anderson a good 5 seconds before the shot was sent towards the net. Can't do much to get out of the way when Anderson was grabing his leg and the D man was making sure he couldn't leave he crease.

Both sides have legit arguments, Though I would lean towards Washington's side. I think that was one that what was called on the ice was going to stand.

As the local rep of the Goaltender's union, I lean towards the Washington side of the argument. Backstrom did make contact, but what the ref likely saw as Andersen's glove being tied up was Andersen holding onto Backstrom.

That should have been obvious watching the replay.



But there was no way that ref was gonna reverse that call. No way.
