Detroit Lions: Malcolm Rodriguez, LB, Oklahoma State - B+ Grade
The Lions had tons of neds entering the 2022 NFL Draft, and linebacker was one of them. Malcolm Rodriguez was someone I had in the fifth- or sixth-round range, so this seems like another solid choice for Detroit.

Lions selected Oklahoma State LB Malcolm Rodriguez with the No. 188 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Rodriguez (5’10/236) was an All-Big 12 honoree his last three seasons on campus capped with an enormous 2021 campaign that included 129 tackles, 15 TFLs, three sacks, and four forced fumbles. Undersized but with football intelligence and straight-line explosion, Rodriguez tends to see things before they happen and fly to the spot. He piled up 397 tackles over the last four years by sifting through traffic and dropping ball-carriers. He’s also improved in coverage in each of the past three years. Rodriguez posted a fabulous 92nd-percentile size-adjusted athletic composite during pre-draft testing including a 4.52 forty. But with arms barely measuring over 30 inches, his small tackling radius manifests in broken tackles. He reminds us of another recent productive, undersized collegiate warrior to enter the NFL, Ben Burr-Kirven.

I'd much rather have had ILB Nephi Sewell than Malcolm Rodriguez

Oh...well...if he's another Ben Burr-Kirven, I'm all in.

Pre-Draft Analysis

Houston has the explosive first step, plenty of length and great closing speed to develop into a disruptive edge rusher in the NFL. He flashes violent hands and good speed-to-power on tape. He stood out during the week of the East-West Shrine game. He's instinctive and tough, but he's short and light for an edge. -- Steve Muench

Jackson State

Is that Neon Deion's school where he's coaching?

Houston played as a rotational player for the University of Florida for the first three years of his career, picking up 103 total tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks over the course of 35 games. In his senior year, he transferred to Deion Sanders-coached Jackson State and absolutely dominated the lower level of competition. After tallying 16.5 sacks and seven forced fumbles in 13 games, he was named FCS All-American in 2021, leading to an invitation to the East-West Shrine Bowl game back in January.

Pre-Draft Analysis

Lucas is a smaller corner who lines up on the outside and over the slot. He flashes the ability to get an early break on the ball and limits production after the catch in off-coverage. He allows too much separation when he's forced to open his hips in space, and he doesn't recover well when he gets caught out of position. He hasn't intercepted a pass since 2019 and gets beat at the catch point at times. -- Steve Muench

Would have preferred a gamble on a high risk player with that last pick. Looking forward to udfa
