Mel Kiper mock draft: Could the Lions take Sauce Gardner at 2?
ESPN’s Mel Kiper projects the Detroit Lions to select Detroit native, corner Sauce Gardner in his latest mock draft.www.prideofdetroit.com
No. 2 Sauce Gardner, CB, Cincinnati
“Can I interest you in a 6-foot-3 corner with long arms and 4.41 40-yard dash speed who didn’t allow a single touchdown in coverage in college? That’s Gardner,
No. 32 Lewis Cine, safety, Georgia
“The more I talk to people in the league, the more I think the Lions will stand pat on a quarterback with their three picks in the top 34,
Kiper has changed his tune and given the Lions a player who many, including myself, believe would be a great fit in Detroit's scheme. Cine is an ideal split-zone safety, capable of dropping to single-high, as well as making an impact from the box where he delivers aggressive, sure tackling.
No. 34 David Ojabo, edge, Michigan
“Ojabo is my top-ranked outside linebacker, even after he tore his Achilles last month and could miss most of the season,” Kiper wrote. “If the Lions are thinking long-term, they could get a steal with a high-ceiling edge rusher.”
A first-round talent for certain, Ojabo was on his way to a possible top-15 selection before being injured at his pro day. There’s a lot of debate about how long his recovery process will be—my study from last year suggested nothing is guaranteed—but it’d be hard to justify adding a player who is dealing with an Achilles injury, when they already have two other defensive starters currently recovering from the same injury.
I never could either. I had to try to cup the ball to my wrist to dunk it.
I would be OK with Cine. Ojabo maybe in the third.I would absolutely HATE those first three picks. You don't take a corner that high, the position doesn't warrant it in the NFL with the way the passing game is called. And Gardner, for as good as he is, is 'handsy', that may be a problem at the next level. And taking Ojabo any time before the fourth round is stupid. This isn't an ACL that has a high rate of recovery, almost no one comes back 100% from an Achilles injury. That plus I think he looked a lot better than he really is playing opposite Hutch.
Cine is the only pick I wouldn't mind from that list.I would be OK with Cine. Ojabo maybe in the third.

Ojabo maybe in the third.
Matching at 34 is absolutely atrocious, but would not mind most of this one.@Mebert might like the beginning and end of this draft

NFL Mock Draft 2022: Complete 7-round edition gives Seahawks, Steelers, Eagles new QBs with Day 1 picks | Sporting News
The Sporting News' latest NFL mock draft for 2022 spans a complete seven rounds, covering all 262 picks from projected No. 1 overall selection Aidan Hutchinson down to Mr. Irrelevant.www.sportingnews.com
2. Detroit Lions (3-13-1)
Kyle Hamilton, S, Notre Dame (6-4, 220 pounds)
32. Detroit Lions (from Rams)
Devin Lloyd, LB, Utah (6-3, 237 pounds)
34. Detroit Lions
John Metchie III, WR, Alabama (5-11, 187 pounds) ..... He's not worthy of this high of a selection
66. Detroit Lions
Sam Howell, QB, North Carolina (6-0, 218 pounds)
97. Detroit Lions (compensatory)
Mykael Wright, CB, Oregon (5-10, 173 pounds)
177. Detroit Lions (compensatory): Bam Knight, RB, NC State (5-11, 210 pounds)
181. Detroit Lions: Chigoziem Okokowo, TE, Maryland (6-2, 244 pounds)
217. Detroit Lions (compensatory): Nephi Sewell, LB, Utah (6-0, 228 pounds)
Matching at 34 is absolutely atrocious, but would not mind most of this one.
If they don't go DE at 2, either 32 or 34 has to be.
Jones is also the best returner in the class, I don't mind that one so much.^^^^
I think the only pick I could honestly critique would be the Slot/CB selection. If a 4-3, strongside, Base End were available at this slot, I would probably go that route. Maybe someone like Josh Paschal, Zachary Taylor, Isaiah Thomas - the latter two would probably be chosen a round too early than where they should be drafted.
It is not bad and would have worked had we not picked up Elliot at safety. I guess it depends on exactly what the scheme ends up being.I could easily live with the following draft proposed by Jeff Risdon. I think this is the one @Old Lion might've been referring to the other day.
I know, I know, the boo-birds come out in droves with all the talk of, "You don't draft a fucking Safety at No. 2 overall. I understand that, however, when you look at Risdon's draft overall, he pretty much immediately walks away with what should be 4 starters by or before 2023 and two players in those first 6 picks that would be considered competition for depth as No.2 at their position (Slot/CB Marcus Jones and TE Daniel Bellinger) along with big upside in developmental players S Markquese Bell and DT Eric Johnson.
Breakdown: 4 starters at positions of need, a Slot/CB, M. Jones, who can compete with AJ Parker/Mike Hughes, a likely NO. 2 TE, and a rotational DT in Eric Johnson.
I can overlook the Hamilton pick simply by seeing he's an instant 2022 starter at SS.
Pickins a starting outside WR beginning in 2023 and rotational in 2022.
Mafe is, at worst, a rotational edge rusher in 2022, and most likely a starter by end of year.
Tindall is brought along slowly in 20222 but is starter LB in 2023.
All things considered and looking at that entire draft of players is a WIN, on paper and projection, in my opinion.

Lions full 2022 mock draft: The 'What I Would Do' edition
Lions full 2022 mock draft: The ‘What I Would Do’ edition for each of Detroit’s picks in the draftlionswire.usatoday.com
No. 2 S Kyle Hamilton
No. 32 WR George Pickens
No. 34 Boye Mafe
No. 66 LB Channing Tindall
No. 97 CB Marcus Jones
No. 177 TE Daniel Bellinger
No. 181 S Markquese Bell (If he develops, he has a huge ceiling)
No. 217 DT Eric Johnson
I don't ever want to see one of my 3 starting WR or CB as a return specialist. Ever.Jones is also the best returner in the class, I don't mind that one so much.
