We saw the origins of these tactics in his Australian Open run, as his solution to the puzzle of his career, Rafael Nadal: Step into the court, take the ball early before it kicks way over your shoulder, and rob your opponent of as much time as you possibly can. (The basic logic is that the earlier you strike the ball, the earlier you put the ball back in your opponent’s court, and the less time you give them to recover after hitting their last shot. Repeat ad nauseum: these little slivers of time really add up.) In that final you could always catch Federer’s feet sneaking inside the baseline, applying constant pressure.


As it turns out, this looks to have not been a one-time fix, but the blueprint for the rest of his career. And it makes a lot of sense. For Federer, it’s wise to rely on the aspects of your game that won’t age as unforgivingly as, say, your knees might: your sense of timing and your feel for the ball, which you’ve spent your whole life refining to freak levels.

When I played Super Tennis on the Super Nintendo, sometimes I'd run to the service box to return a serve. I'm not sure if I hit it before or after it bounced, but I could win some quick points sometimes.

With how awful the field of 20 somethings are and considering Murray's decline, and Djokovic's PATHETIC form since the French last year, I would see he can win a couple.

Nadal is still his main roadblock for slams and even then, Nadal is 31 himself with lots of mileage and in clear decline. Yes he played well on clay this year, but he always plays well on clay. I need to see what he can do on grass/HC's. He was still getting some confidence back prior to the Clay season this year. Need to see what he does at Wimbledon and the North American HC swing

Nadal did make the Australian Open and Miami Finals.

I also think Wawrinka is a threat in any best of 5.

Frankly after watching Fed beat Kachanov I am not very impressed with his form. He is not sharp with his serves yet. He is relying sometimes on mistakes from his opponent. So everything has to go well with the draw and luck and other factors for Roger to lift SW19.

NextGen guys also nipping at the heels of older players. This will be an interesting Wimbledon. Nadal's form is in question as he didn't compete in the warmups. I think if Nadal skips grass altogether it might be good for him. But no one skips Wimby! It's the greatest of all slams. In fact the other slams are so behind in significance and attraction it's not funny! Wimbledon is in a league of its own GrandSlam wise.

Not so sure anymore. US Open defintely has gotten huge now. Combine that with the roofs being installed and you have a much livelier venue that wont ever be rained out. Would not surprise me to see a third roof in the future. Attendance keeps setting records while at Wimby they are at a 9 year low.

Agreed. US Open is pretty freaking big now and is way above FO/AO and is closing on Wimbledon.

Is attendance a good measure?

Back on this topic. IMO, for some European players and fans, the French Open is the biggest major for them.

I randomly met a French exchange student last summer, and he said he didn't care as much for Wimbledon, but loved the FO.

For Asian fans, the Australian Open is the biggest major for them. Or at worst, it's like their USO.

I remember a radio interview with Andy Roddick in 2008 or 2009. The host said that Roddick winning the USO was extra special since it was one of the most important majors of the four, and more important than some of the other ones.

Roddick said "no, actually for people who live in Asia, the Australian Open is just as big to them".

The radio host also said that people who win the USO usually end up being multi-slam champs.

Again, Roddick corrected the host and pointed out that it wasn't always true.

So even though the radio host tried to hype Roddick's accomplishments, he actually provided with some counter-facts, lol.

Looking at it now, Roddick, Del Potro, and Cilic are recent one-slam USO winners.
