how about this...

lets take a one dimensional team... they either throw the ball well, they run the ball well, or they have a good defense...

But they only have one of those traits... who is most likely to be the best team??

my bet would be the passing team...

there has always been a cliche that running creates Field goals and Passing creates TDs... i believe that cliche to be true in general terms

give me the defensive team. short fields make it WAY easier to score.
Pats last year is a great example, their DST outscored a bunch of the opposing offenses on their own.

dominant D will always be the way, since it makes playing offense easier

And I'd never argue that fact. A strong D wins games maybe even more so than regardless of how the offense is constructed.
I can promise, D coordinators want thier teams running the ball, controlling the clock, and keeping thier D fresh too.

There are exactly two things a passing offense is good for..filling the seats/ratings and fantasy football.

I'll just ask this, and then I'm dropping it..cuz reality seems to be a fuzzy concept on this subject..

Did Bruce Arians ever once say anything to the affect of "we've gotta pass more to win games" last year? If he did, I'll admit defeat, I'll proclaim you all geniuses and never mention it again. If he didn't..well...there it is

You can say analysts can say what they want, and have a fair point. You cannot say coaches can say what they want. Basically youre saying you know more about how to win a football game than the penultimate few dozen who are getting paid to actually do it.

Why not say doctors can say what they want, I think a good bleeding cures everything. Or scientists can say what they want, the earth is flat.

Not really the same thing. Coaches have many roles. They develop and train players, prepare them mentally and physically for game day, identity weaknesses in other teams, design plays, make roster decisions, and make game day decisions. There's a LOT of stuff in there that you and I really don't know jack shit about and the coaches are no doubt the experts on.

But there are also things that coaches are NOT experts on and these things can be quantified.

We can quantify the added value passing the ball brings. We can quantify the added value being more aggressive on 4th downs brings. Coaches are not experts in statistics (though the smart coaches will listen to their analytics departments for these things).

It doesn't really matter if a coach thinks running the ball is awesome on first down when you can mathematically show that running the ball on first down on average leaves you worse off than passing. Unless a coach is actually crunching those numbers (he's not), he's not the expert on it.

And fwiw - analytics in football is a bit behind baseball and basketball. And these are the same arguments that have been used in other sports too. The old school baseball and basketball guys claimed they were the experts because they understood the game and you couldn't quantify those results. Yet 5, 10, 20 years later who was right? The guys crunching the numbers and the leagues eventually adjusted.

I think Chubb could win the rushing title, but I also think that it could have as much to do with the other guys that might. Last year Kamara and Barkley were both hurt for a lot of the year. Zeke found himself on a pass first team for the first time in his career, but now the Cowboys have paid him but not Dak so I'm betting the Cowboys try to showcase Zeke more and make Dak look less valuable, but that's completely my opinion. If all of them stay healthy I think Zeke and Barkley both finish ahead of Chubb because neither has any competition for carries. And I expect at least a little bit of a decline from Henry this year.

Yeah I agree. I think Chubb can contend for it but if I had a top 3 I would put Zeke and Barkley at 1 and 2...most likely to lead in rushing. Some good points there

Browns hired analytics acolyte Depodesta to run thier team "analytically" 3 years ago...thats working out well

you have my cell phone number my man, just send me a text or give me a call before you use analogies/make comparisons.

the Browns have won 13 games the last 2 seasons. You have to add up their previous FIVE seasons' worth of wins to surpass that mark, and you still only get to 15 wins.
And they did that with 3 different HC's over the last 2 years, including Kitchens, who damn near everyone thought was a terrible hire.

it is literally working and improving their team!

Lol...ok, they improved. I'm just gonna give ya that.

Bit they're still a losing football team. And the analytics department spearheaded the Kitchen's hire.
Browns' analytics department played a significant role in the hiring of Freddie Kitchens

Baker was on fire the back-half of his rookie year, so I understood the logic, even if I thought that should've found someone with HC experience.....but they don't seem to be a team that likes HCs that have done it before, if recent trends hold true, lol

like pretty much everything in life, football strategy included, there is more than one way to get things done, and typically, the most successful integrate multiple strategies blended together and know when to lean harder one way or the other.

I'm like you though, I like watching the 'pound the rock' football and it has been the proven winning strategy in the history of the game. But as the rules keep making the game softer and softer (not a knock, just the truth), we're going to continue to see more and more passing.

I think there is a misconception with the debate between Passing and running... I don't think anyone is saying that running teams don't win... They actually are more likely to win... we are saying that passing gives you a better chance to win... There is a huge difference between the two statements...

Running first teams that find success are almost always defensive first teams... so the running is to keep their defense off the field to give them the rest to be optimal... it is also to play field goal game and field possession game...

that is certainly a great path to be a winning team... But if you don't have a strong defense, you cant rely on that...

and to have a good offense, the passing game is more vital than the running game... Sure passing is riskier, as more negative things can happen... But it also gives the much bigger payout... you get bulk yards, and are more likely to score a TD...

so of course the numbers will show passing is better than running... as running is more of a compliment to everything else...

Well, thats the analytics team, the HC's that have done it before, are gonna do it the way they know how to win. It reminds me of that subplot in MoneyBall, where Art How's is constantly at odds with Billy Bean and "Peter Brandt"- who is Depodesta, but isnt. Obviously that entire situation was over dramatized, but the basic principal of the struggle of how to manage the team was real. The analytics only work if you follow the strategy..make the " Hatterberg play", not the "Pena play". Well, coaches who have been there done that, proven they know how to win, they'll make the " Pena play", so they want a coach who does it thier way. And if Kitchens was doing things "thier way".. They have some work to do.
I would imagine, eventually, they'll find a proper mixture and it'll work.

And I'd also agree, the best way to approach it, is to take things that work from multiple different theories, and apply what your personnel can execute effectively into your game plan. Wether thats more pass than run, or vice versa. But, you gotta have the basic fundamental of a good run game to win in the big moments. Mahommes, 50 TDs, no SB, Brady, 50 TD's, no SB. Manning 50 TD's, no SB. Marino, perhaps the best pure passer the game has ever seen, never had a run game, never won a SB.

The passing guys ain't wrong, I never said you CANNOT win games with a great passing attack..in fact I said the opposite.
