Yeah, while our defense takes a huge hit this year,(and I mean HUGE, Fairley is vital) it might have improved in the long run. Won't need to franchise tag him now.

agreed -- i think fairley healthy is one of the main reason the Lions run defense has become so good the last year and a half (as well as the addition of DE's, who are good against the run too). hopefully austin has some more magic in his bag of tricks, as losing the 1st and 2nd string nickel, starting DT and starting MLB is a LOT of players to be missing and continue to be really productive.
