Not entirely true. With the cap increase the contract isn't as bad as it initially looks. His play will decline in the coming years but he has been our most consistent defender for years. On the PK, defending a lead late in a game, there is nobody I want out there more. Plus his leadership and physical play are needed on a team that doesn't have much of either. Devils D will be stacked next year if they remain healthy.

you may be right. In the playoffs I saw a guy after a long career playing way outside of his shoes, as it were.
I figured someone might pay a lot for that ... $3m for ONE year maybe, and if anyone tacked on extra year(s), I figured it would be someone other than the devils. The devils KNOW what his usual play is, and would have the best sense of what it might be in year three

oh man, how about this for a goaltending platoon:
Steve Mason
Sergei Bobrovski
Curtis McElhinny
Allan York

Yeah, but he has other intangibles as well...but seriously, you're right. This is market value though.

Also, Bruce Garrioch is a dick:
@SunGarrioch
I'm just thinking: Who wouldn't be excited to get out of the Columbus Blue Jackets? Rick Nash can't wait. #NHL
@SunGarrioch
Geez, I didn't know the Columbus Blue Jackets had that many fans ... left. #NHL

Twitter has made sports writers become more like fans than slightly less biased professionals.

Sal has never been that great of a Dman. Hell, he was traded for Cam Janssen. He was not that great this year outside of the playoffs and was out all of last year.

Why bring him back......

So, not to sound contrarian, but does anyone other than me think that Parise at 7.5, 8, 8.5, 9 is a bit overpaid?

75-80 points per year.....

I wouldn't want him at higher than 7. I think market value for his production starts at 6 and ends at 7.

Offensively Parise is not a 100 point type of guy, but the intangibles he brings make him an elite player. He is constantly going at 100% and that rubs off on other players. Both forechecking and backchecking he is as good as anybody in the league. Also, I don't care what anybody says, his hand eye and stickwork are better than anybody in the league. On the PK he keeps guys honest because he will absolutely intercept any and all passes in his vicinity. His ability to deflect pucks in front of the net is superhuman. The guy does everything.

Which is why I would go 7-8. You always have to overpay in FA a bit. Not to mention Zach on Sid's wing should see an increase in numbers. Also, this has been an organizational need since Sid came into the league seven years ago with no longterm hope in sight. You don't pass on that if the difference is a million dollars.

Pavel Datsyuk says not so fast my friend.

I definitely agree with this. It's not about being a specialist, he's a complete package. That's where I can see him fitting in with the Penguins. No team can have too many complete players.

I'm not sure how to gauge the Devils spending. With financial uncertainty they've put a lot of money into two older goalies (I understand Brodeur getting the money, deserves it...and I love Moose, but that's a lot of money for combined age of over 80) and Salvador. Not sure if that helps or hurts their case with Parise.

Knew that was coming. Put him on the Devils and he blends in with everybody else.

a player of Datsyuk's caliber, as in his two way ability, sticks out on any team.

I recommend you sit and watch a Wings game and focus on him. You will see everything that he does.

It seems our Venn Diagram intercepts at 7.

I also think Parise is a better signing long term for the Penguins than Suter, by the way, because we have nothing in the system at wing. We do have defensemen, though. Lots of them. Talented ones.

I'm not knocking him as a player by any means. Given the choice, yes I'd rather have Datsyuk. However in terms of forechecking and backchecking Parise is right on par with him or anybody else for that matter.

Considering the long term deals Suter is looking at, I feel like signing him would be like writing a goodbye letter to Tanger.

I don't think anyone is on par with a healthy Datsyuk in terms of backchecking.

But Parise is certainly on that next level.
