Whether it's deemed deliberate or not I think that is worthy of at least some suspension no matter who it is. At best, he was being reckless. At worst, he was intentioanlly playing dirty. The act, the result, and the intent usually all come into play. Nodody except him knows the intent but the act and the result were both bad. If deemed unintentional that's worthy of a light suspension in my opinion (or in this case as light as appropriate for a repeat offender). If it's deemed intentional that should be a huge suspension. I'm thinking it might have been somewhere in between those 2 scenarios. I'm not sure he intended to do exactly what happened but I'm not convinced his intentions were entirely good either.

Exactly. He didn't go into that corner thinking "I'm going to end his season here", but he did play fast and loose with the rules by trying to take Karlsson off balance. Had he just tried to pin him to the boards and not put him on his ass for effect, his skate wouldn't have been anywhere near Karlsson's ankle.

And given the guy's history... Amazing coincidences that it's ALWAYS a star player he hits in a questionable way. And it's always a goon he turtles away from.

It's also interesting to me how some of the exact same Pens fans that were calling for Steckel to be executed by firing squad because Crosby was admiring a pass are screaming at the top of their lungs now that Matt Cooke was just going into that corner to give Karlsson flowers.

I've seen a lot of different blogs bring up the point about the Kevlar socks(don't know if karlsson was using them)... why don't they just make that shit mandatory equipment. Sounds like a smart move to me :2cents:

Yeah. Not sure the number of injuries warrants making it mandatory, but if a piece of gear existed to reduce the risk of being in that much pain? I'd be wearing 'em. I may ask at the hockey shop this weekend if they have 'em and I'm only coaching.

You guys need to watch this clip:

Huge Loss - TSN Video

It's a freak accident, guys. These analysts are good - we're not talking Mike Milbury. And they have no reason to defend Cooke, espeically Aaron Ward. The fact is, players lift their leg for balance or to pin the opposition all the time. It's not an unusual play, just a freak accident.

I don't blame Sens fans for seeing intent, just like I don't blame the Pens fans who thought Steckel on Crosby was intentional - both were just weird plays. It's tough to lose your star player, especially one who's got as much potential as Karlsson.

Hope he takes his time to get back to 100%.

That video is what i was talking about here:

Good job by tsn showing exact same physical move cooke did to try and pin karlsson as it happened 3 times in the first period of the flames stars game

I understand not wanting to give cooke the benefit of the doubt but caman

players call this the "hit and pin" and Aaron Ward was able to find two similar hits in the calgary dallas game in the first 5 minutes of that game ... a guy trying to get another guy pinned into the boards by raising his knee basically up into the triangle between his skates ...its basically a can opener without using the stick ... the end result of those 2 hits in the stars flames game obviously not as serious

I haven't even seen the hit yet... But if Cooke is involved, it's intentional.

That is pure hatred speaking, not logic.

That's what being a hockey fan is all about!

After seeing it a couple of times last night, I think it was an accident. After reviewing a lot of the typical hits that we see in slow motion, I'm sure that we can nitpick launching, intent to injure, targeting the head or knees, etc.

I get it, it's Matt Cooke. Watching the hit in real time really doesn't make me think that it was intentional though. If he really wanted to cut EK's leg, I feel like we would have seen something more obvious anyway.

not sure it was intentional and cant prove it anyway otherwise. I am shocked how the media is pushing the fans to hate Cooke and the NHL for no suspension. reading the tweets of some main media guys out east they are going nuts on pushing the fans to anger. I am still surprised how unprofessional "professional" media personalities act on twitter.

on twitter, Don Brennan from the Ottawa Sun said it was intentional within seconds of the incident :L

he's the guy that also once tweeted that the Sens should go after Sidney Crosbys knee

Seriously, Cooke should be suspended for the year. As was stated, I don't think he meant to injure him, but he was using a dirty tactic. The guy has had countless crossing the line incidents. He doesn't get it. How many more guys need to get injured by this piece of shit?

everybody should be getting suspended then

Pierre lebrun:

I thought former NHLer Aaron Ward did a great job on TSN in Canada on Wednesday night showing clips of mundane plays from the Dallas-Calgary game, where players lifted their skates in trying to pin opposing players to the boards. It happens all the time. Just not often with the horrific result that it did with Cooke and Karlsson.

Yeah, I gotta agree with jstew (and LeBrun), this tactic has essentally replaced the free arm around a defenseman which usually results in a holding penalty. That said, I don't care for Cooke's technique (skate doesn't have to be that high).

/Disclaimer: I do not like Matt Cooke.

That means nothing to me. You can pin a player against the boards without lifting your skate and trying to trip them up. And if you can't? Then you're outmatched, that's your problem.

its really replaced the can opener

instead of using your stick to stick between a guys to take him off balance your using your raised knee to both bump and then wedge a guy

I actually loathe twitter now. FaceBook I enjoy seldom use, not living on it. But twitter is pretty fucking evil. It is so easy to spread lies, and people are so easily duped, that it could (and already has many times) cause mass confusion.
