Too bad ,man. Dusty did a good job for the Reds. He had to deal with a stroke health scare last year which was not fair to him. He made the playoffs again this year and had to play in the one game playoff. I hope he gets another shot somewhere. He turned the Reds around like he did with Chicago and the Giants. I think the Reds blew it. Should of kept Dusty.

Baker is/was one of the most over-rated managers of the last 30 years.

Now the Reds have a chance to do something next year.

That's a bit of a stretch. In Baker's 6 years with Cincy, he posted a 509-463 record, an average of 85-77 per season. Made the playoffs 3 out of 6 years. That's pretty good considering how good the Cardinals have been over the past decade.

I disagree that Baker is wildly overrated, he's ok to good at the main function of a manager, keeping the clubhouse humming and the players happy and maximizing their effort and potential.

The "x's and o's" strategy stuff is what's overrated to me...most actual in game decisions are pretty standard by the book stuff (pinch hitting and bullpen), so there's not that many decisions a good or bad manager can really affect. My guess is a really bad tactician (Ozzie Guillen, Dusty Baker, etc) might cost you 2-3 games a year (but potentially a game 6 in the World Series :L), and a good one (Joe Maddon, Tony LaRussa) might get you an additional 2-3 wins.

Baker seems like a good manager to get his team to play happy and play hard, but is no genius with tactics. He'll get another gig if he wants it.

Here is where the big difference between managers who try to win 90 and managers who try to win 11 (or 12).

Dusty has potential to win 90, but does not have the technical ability to win 11/12.

Or his fault that Alou blew a gasket...

Or Rodriguez's fault he gave up 73 runs...

He has a knack of continuing to allow these blowups to occur. A manager that concentrates on the 11/12 instead of the 90 will make sure his players are prepared for these situations. Dusty's players always seem to be unprepared.

Baker seems like a good manager to get his team to play happy and play hard, but is no genius with tactics.

I vote this statement as biggest understatement of the year, maybe even the decade. Baker is one of the worst game-day managers I have ever suffered through as a Giants fan.

2000 NLDS. Moron lets Gardner bat with the *BASES LOADED* in the top of the 5th instead of pinch-hitting. During the press session after the game, Dusty comments on why he let Gardner hit : "I wanted to save the bullpen for tomorrow's game". IT WAS AN ELIMINATION GAME YOU MORON. YOU LOST THE GAME BECAUSE OF YOUR BRAIN-DEAD MANAGING AND SO THERE WAS NO GAME THE NEXT DAY. To make it even worse, Gardner gets pulled in the bottom of the 5th, after giving up two runs.

I will never forgive you for that, "douchty". I did a happy dance when he was fired after 2002.

He's got a year left on his contract that he still gets paid, so my guess is he'll take a year off and see what openings are there next year. He'll get a job somewhere else for sure. If he's in a hurry there's an opening in Washington. There's also one in Seattle but I doubt he would ever work in the AL, and the Cubs have an opening too but I really doubt they want him back (or he wants to go back).

He might want to consider the AL though, less decisions for him to screw up.

Not a huge fan of Noggin, but compared to Pea Brain, he's a genius.

Noggin has his tendencies (continually trying to play Weaver-ball, for example), but his handling of the personalities, his in-game management (with a couple odd exceptions this season), and his concentration on the 11/12 over the 90 make him a "never-fire" candidate, in my mind.

I understand SF's comment as a joke/jab. I hope yours was as well, and I just need to take a new cap-size measurement.
