Drunken Iowa Football Player Mistakes Police Car for Uber

IOWA CITY, Iowa – A University of Iowa football player was arrested over the weekend for public intoxication after police say he tried to get into a police car, because he thought it was an Uber.

A criminal complaint says 22-year-old Brady Reiff, a starting defensive tackle, was arrested Saturday morning shortly after 2:00 on Iowa Avenue. It says Reiff tried to open the front door of the police car, noticed a front seat passenger and then tried to open a rear door.

The officer asked Reiff what he was doing, and Reiff responded asking for a ride because according to the complaint, “he thought that was our job.” The officer then asked if he thought the car was an Uber and he replied, “Yes.”

An initial breath test at the scene yielded results of .204 BaC and Reiff was arrested.

Online court records shoe Reiff pleaded guilty Monday to public intoxication. He’ll have to pay a $65 fine and court costs.

According to the Cedar Rapids Gazette, Reiff has been suspended for the Hawkeyes’ first game on September 1st against Northern Illinois.

Bullshit. Police cars should be marked better so things like this don't happen. Entrapment!

After thinking about it and @006 comment, it is a crappy move by the cop. There really was no real reason to arrest Reiff. The cop should have taken Reiff back to his place.

(1) Reiff is 22 years old, he is old enough to legally drink.
(2) He obviously wasn't going to drive. That is why he got in the vehicle.
(3) Doesn't sound like he was being disruptive or disturbing. He went to the cop (on accident), the cop didn't really go to him.

Sounds like Iowa City and Athens, GA cops have a lot in common.

I mean, I don't wanna go full Waco, but there has to be a happy medium.

Exactly. I was kinda fucking around, but at the same time this is a perfect time for a police officer to help a kid.... Get him home. Follow up and explain that he plays for Iowa and could make millions or just be a good guy who sells insurance to people all over Iowa, which entails watching netflix all day and racking up renewals. If it happens again he's in trouble.

First things first...it's total fucking bullshit to arrest this kid.

Note from personal experience in Iowa.

You do not have to take a breathalyzer if you are not driving or in any way control of a vehicle.
Taking a breathalyzer is a condition of having a driver's license. You agree to it when you get your license.

I'm not going to get into specifics, but I was a part of an incident where the cops were called. The cop told me outside the establishment that I could take a breathalyzer if I wanted, but it's not mandatory. He couldn't make me take one.
I opted not to because I was pretty lit and it would have been incriminating.

I was found not guilty of public intoxication.

If he was black, NAACP and BLM would be all over Iowa City right now. That is a good point.
