Falcons picking Penix is total nonsense imo. I think you can realistically do that if you're picking at 20 or something like that. At pick 8, they were getting trade back offers. You're losing 2+ potential starters for taking Penix who is a backup for at least 2 years. They could've traded back and gotten Dallas Turner, Q Mitchell, or Latu who had been mocked at 8 and also picked up at least a 2nd rounder.
If they trade back with Seattle or New Orleans they still get their pick of the best EDGE, CB or even DT. Then they grab an extra 2nd + the 2nd they already have. That is 3 possible starters on defense. So ridiculous. I love Penix but the player isn't the issue here. Like you said, if they take him at 20 there is no issue here. Sitting a guy making a ton of money for at least 2 years but possibly 3-4.

AJ Terrell is probably set to get $28-30 mil a year after the season or whatever the highest paid CB gets. Cousins cap hit is $40mil in 2025 and $57.5mil in 2026. It kinda sounds like Atlanta thinks they already have all of their pieces and they are just juggling money and with Cousins the money becomes too much so they have a smooth transition.

So I guess that begs the question: do they have a Super Bowl roster?

It's going to be fascinating to see what happens with these six QBs taken in the top 12. If history is any guide, most will bust. I'm worried Daniels is going to pan out and finally end the DC QB curse.

Yeah, I think historically we're looking at 2 franchise QBs out of 6 on average. Regardless, 6 new QBs shakes up the NFL a ton.

1 franchise QB, 1 guy where half of us argue that he is a franchise QB and the other half argue that he's not, 1 journeyman who busts for drafting team but eventually starts elsewhere and 3 busts.

So glad my Vikes got in on this game!

Hmmm....

Franchise: Caleb Williams
Cousins: JJ McCarthy
Goff: Drake Maye

Other 3 Bust.

I'm sure this will age well.

Well they have a damn good team but they have holes on defense. Edge and another CB are definitely pieces they need. They can definitely get some pieces on day 2 or even day 3 but not sure starters at that point.

Add Daniels to the Franchise list. Add Maye to the bust list. Not working with much in NE

Alternative angle:

If they trade him next offseason, that "free" draft pick only costs them $37M in dead cap space.

If they trade him in two offseasons, that "free" draft pick only costs them $25 in dead cap space.
For one year. They'll have the pick for 4+ years.

The Eagles should move up for Cooper DeJean. The secondary has been a problem for a few years. They band-aided it with Slay and other veterans. Time to fix it for good. The new scheme likes to use three safeties. Maddox always gets hurt and they only brought him back late in FA. DeJean solves a lot of problems.

It would cost both 2nds, but we'd get an early 3rd rounder back. Could still get a WR or LB there.

Not sure why the Falcons are getting so much heat for Penix as IMO he was the best overall option except his medical. If they think he is the best and have to sit him for a couple of years then so be it. It’s not like Falcons have a prayer at the Super Bowl this year.

They should trade Kirk to the Raiders.

Bc they picked Penix at 8. Paying him big money to sit 2, 3 or 4 years. Injury prone and already 24 years old + they gave a QB $100M guaranteed in the offseason. Even in 2026 he will have a $35M dead cap hit

Then why pay Cousins like he is a top 8 QB?
No idea, do you honestly think they have a prayer? I think they wanted to be good, then one of their top prospects was there. IMO before the pick they thought Cousins can get them to the divisional round in the next 2 years but Penix can get them to a Super Bowl in years 3 and 4

If their goal is to win a Super Bowl in years 3, 4 and 5 then what does it matter though? I mean I get it but I just personally think he was the best QB in the draft.
