Rome Odunze had a 75% contested catch rate last year which was #1 in the nation and 21 contested catches which is #1 in the nation. His drop rate was 6th in the nation among all WRs. Rome Odunze is 6'3, 212, 1.52 10 yd split which is NFL elite, 4.45 40 time which is NFL solid, 39" vert which is NFL elite, 6.88 3 cone which is NFL solid and elite for his size.

If Odunze makes 5 fewer contested catches we're talking about Washington in a completely different light last year
Not saying Rome isn’t good or potentially great. Just no fan would’ve heard of him if it wasn’t for Penix being the star he was.

I read a draftnik analysis that showed that Penix was repeatedly bailed out by those Washington receivers, who caught a lot of contested passes and also a lot of throws that were not perfectly accurate. He can throw a pretty ball sometimes, with great placement, but his placement was sometimes off and guys like Odunze and Macmillan made the play anyway.
I'm looking at PFFs turnover worthy plays and I don't think it paints that picture, either. The only QB that was downright sloppy with the ball was Caleb Williams. Bo Nix was super safe. The rest somewhere in between.

Penix was a gunslinger and he had the receivers to do it. If he had Drake Maye's receivers then we'd have no idea how to evaluate him.

It's going to be fascinating to see if Penix made Odunze, vice versa, or neither.

This league-wide panic of drafting every QB under the sun is hilarious.

The NFL seems to be banking on neither. It is interesting his stud LT is seen as a Center prospect on the Steelers.

QB is also such an important position that if you really think you have identified a potential franchise QB, it is sometimes worth pulling the trigger, even if you have one. When the Eagles drafted Jalen Hurts in the second round, it was far and away my least favorite selection. But clearly they knew what they were doing! They were beginning to have doubts about Wentz and wanted to groom another option.

Penix may or may not play, but if Cousins gets hurt or falls off, and the Falcons are a contending team, now they will keep rolling.

The big thing of course is the opportunity cost of using a pick on a position you don't immediately need, when you could have gotten a lineman or some other impact starter in the top 10 that would help you win right away.
Exactly.

Heinicke inspires very little confidence.

A lot of people think Fautanu can play tackle in the NFL but the scouts get obsessed with things like arm length and he comes up a little short on the spider charts. I think many teams also view these guys as easier to start inside as rookies. The Eagles were reportedly very interested in him as a potential right guard who could eventually slide out to tackle.

Hmmm....

Franchise: Caleb Williams
Cousins: JJ McCarthy
Goff: Drake Maye

Other 3 Bust.

I'm sure this will age well.

Man I would take that in a heartbeat.

Crazy year in that regards.

It is amazing that NFL teams still havent realized that drafting the WRONG QB in the 1st round is 1000 times worse for a franchise than not drafting one at all.

As weird as it was for the Falcons to not trade down, I feel like maybe the Chargers and Titans probably should've been in some kind of talks with Alt and Latham because the Chargers needed a RT and drafted a LT and the Titans needed a LT and drafted a RT.

Stuff like that makes day 1 draft grades not really make any sense without seeing a draft strategy.

The Falcons Penix pick is still so baffling to me. I get they were set on OL but Odunze or Latu/Murphy would've made so much more sense.

I think the lesson they have realized is quite different: draft a franchise QB or you have no shot.

Teams without great QBs cannot compete in the modern NFL, and it is nearly impossible to get a great QB outside of the draft.

You can maybe get one in free agency or trade, but best case scenario, they are likely to be really old guys in their golden years, or more of the good, Kirk Cousins variety. Great QBs are locked down forever by the franchises that select them.

So teams are going to keep rolling at the craps table, hoping to get a franchise QB, and losing over and over until they get one.

I don't mind the Chargers one so much. Lions drafted Sewell when they had Decker and put him at right, I am pretty happy with the results.

For the Titans I would have taken Mims before Latham, but I am not Bill Callahan. There is a decent chance he knows more than me.

If the Rams get Pwers-Johnson or Jenkins I'm gonna be pissed off.

It's going to be fascinating to see what happens with these six QBs taken in the top 12. If history is any guide, most will bust. I'm worried Daniels is going to pan out and finally end the DC QB curse.
Daniels is the only I really “like”.

And he’s so damn skinny I worry about him too.
