Logan Gilbert has been tearing it up so far. For those of you who forget as quickly as I do, he was our first round pick in the 2019 draft and was ranked by MLB.com as our 6th best prospect. So far in 7 starts between A and A+ he has a 1.75 ERA, 0.806 WHIP, 53Ks, 9 BBs in only 36 innings. Pretty damn impressive.

Very true. There are a lot of guys the Mariners have to hit on unfortunately. Despite the fact that the Mariners really improved their farm system this offseason, they're still just roughly middle of the pack and are really carried by their outfield depth and don't really have many truly elite prospects.

Kikuchi has adjusted to the majors better than I would've initially anticipated and I believe he will continue to improve, but his ceiling is a #2 at best IMO. Unfortunately barring any surprises, I don't think the Mariners have a pitcher in the organization who legitimately projects as a #1 starter.

I think the philosophy down the road is having these guys that are middle twenties on the rotation to last for a few years so Marco was a good trade even though a lot of people where crying that he traded away Tyler oneill whom is still not the major league roster yet. Then we acquired Kikuchi and some point Sheffield will be brought up so thats 3/5 starter spots for the next few years by then logan gilbert should be making his debut 2021 if all goes well with him.

what concerns me is that Kevin white and Kyle Lewis are in the minors stinking up the place. If they were on a solid track they would fit in nicely with Lewis at CF and White at 1st base.

Seems like management is building a team with players in their mid 20s to be around for the next few years. I know that the record is awful but these guys arent god awful players.

So you can kind of see the direction the team is going this is probably the look this year and next. If you take out the record and look at the names these arent the worst players and most of these guys barely have major league experience about average middle 20s in age. Like I said before If Lewis and White werent stinking up the place they would fit nicely at CF and 1st base. Logan gilbert would be a nice option next year or 2021.

I still go on record as saying the O’Neill trade was a black mark on Dipoto as to me it was still a stupid trade. Marco had no future with the Cardinals and O’Neill was the only legit positional prospect they had because Lewis blew out his knee. It is the NFL equivalent of trading your first round pick for a 4th round pick. Even if that 4th round pick turns out to be a HOF it is a dumb deal when if doing your job as a GM you could’ve gotten that HOF without giving up your 1st round pick.

We will see who they hold onto. I still have hope for White but am losing it quickly for Lewis which sucks. He looked great pre-injury but just hasnt been able to overcome it. Looking at least a few years down the line:

I kinda hope Haniger and Gonzalez are dealt eventually. I dont see 2021 as realistic and I hope its not forced just to justify keeping Dipoto around. This team is no where close IMO. Narvaez is a good bat but dont love him behind the plate at all. I dont think there is a guy in the system before Cal Raleigh that can come up so probably just looking at a stopgap or two until that time comes.

Man I really wish Carlson would not have had tommy john surgery I fear his fate will be like Lewis he may not bounce back from this. A lot of people probably dont remember but this reminds me of Danny Hultzen that guy looked like cliff lee before he got hurt in the minors and he never recovered from it and his career was pretty much done

Nice. Well earned promotion, I actually didn't hear about this until seeing your post. Everything I've heard and read about him indicates he's already very well developed physically and technique wise despite being only 19 years old. He really has the potential to rise through the minors quite quickly with how well he has been playing.

When the mid-season prospect rankings come out, I'd be surprised if he didn't shoot up a lot. I think most have him around 50 or so, but I could definitely see him shooting up to the 30s or 20s if he keeps it up. He looks like a legitimate five tool player.

Yeah Seager isn't going anywhere I was trying to pencil in players that were brought in by Dipoto. I actually like Mallex Smith I love players that can get on base and run as fast as he can that bothers the hell out of pitchers knowing guys like this get on base. I wish his bat was figured out because to go from .297 in Tampa to .197 with us is a huge difference and a big problem.

I am starting to like shed long this rookie is currently on a 7 game hitting streak and is starting to get a little comfortable in the big league. I really want to see how him and Crawford finish out the rest of the season.

Great news. One thing I have always wondered since it’s always been stated you can ruin a playing by rushing him to the big leagues, I’m wondering is that same thing true trying to a prospect to AA? That is generally considered the pinnacle of the minors so have always been curious and I don’t ever really hear anything negative about getting a guy to AA too soon?

Yeah Seager isn't going anywhere I was trying to pencil in players that were brought in by Dipoto. Luckily it looks like Mallex seems to have figured it out at the plate since being sent down to AAA. In his ten games since coming back he's hitting .297/.350/.459.

Would be nice to see Shed Long and J.P. Crawford continue playing well. Long is hitting .333 over his 7 game hit streak.

No idea how that works and it probably varies by player. I think the biggest issue with rushing a player through the minors could possibly lead to struggles that could cause confidence issues that lead them to making so many adjustments they get away from what made them a good player in the first place.

I think a guy like Kelenic isn't someone you would worry about as much since everything I've heard indicates he's very advanced physically and technique wise for his age. It's probably more of a concern with raw players who still need to tweak various aspects of their game.

I also think at the lower levels it also consists of a lot of guys who are trying to make the majors but might not have a realistic shot.

One of my best friend's brother was a projected first round pick but then had Tommy John and fell to the 10th round or so. He struggled in two years in the minors and made it to high A but eventually decided to give up baseball because he was merely living off of his signing bonus since they don't get paid shit in the minors.

If I had to speculate, the level of competition between A and AA is probably the biggest jump. High A and low A probably weed out a lot of people like in the example above.
